Grand Seiko Brings the UFA Calibre and Micro-Adjustment to the Black 40mm Lake Suwa SLGB007
A new model that feels familiar... but shows major evolutions in and out.
While in an article that will be published in a few on MONOCHROME, explaining the update that concerns the rest of the Evolution 9 collection, there is one model that stands apart for bringing a fresh new look to the range. Indeed, the new reference SLGB007 introduces the classic Lake Suwa texture in an unprecedented black version… Not something you’d call breaking news, right? Well, there’s much more to tell here, as this new Grand Seiko watch is not just about its dial but also about its movement, bracelet, clasp… The changes are all over the watch.
At first, this new Grand Seiko SLGB007 appears as a simple evolution of well-known, existing models from the Evolution 9 collection, namely the White Birch SLGA009, the Minamo SLGA007 & Tree-Rings SLGA008, the Lake Suwa SLGA007, the Lake Suwa SLGA019 or the Atera Valley SLGA025, but there’s more here than just the new black colour applied to the Lake Suwa pattern…
Let’s start with what’s familiar, and that’s the case. Just like all the other models mentioned above, the Black Lake Suwa SLGB007 utilises the classic 40mm case we’ve come to know over the past 5 years, when GS launched the SLGH002 with the new Hi-Beat calibre 9SA5 and Dual Impulse Escapement as part of its 60th Anniversary celebrations. This sharp, more ergonomic case with a box-shaped sapphire crystal is 0.1mm thinner here (due to the movement inside) and retains a sub-48mm lug-to-lug measurement. Water-resistance is rated at 100m thanks to a screw-down crown and screwed caseback. And GS chose to use a case and bracelet made of high-strength titanium, making this watch light and comfortable.
For this SLGB007, the emblematic Lake Suwa pattern is presented for the first time in black. As a reminder, the texture is inspired by the lake near the Shinshu Watch Studio, which is housed in a Seiko Epson facility in the city of Shiojiri. The dial is paired with faceted and bevelled applied indexes and hands (no lume), and all elements are kept silver-toned for a discreet, monochromatic look.
Let’s move now to the main evolutions, starting with the bracelet. As noted, it is made of high-intensity titanium, but it has been entirely revised compared with all the references I mentioned in the introduction. There were basically two recurring complaints about the previous bracelet: it was too wide or not tapering enough, and there was no adjustment on the clasp. Both issues have been addressed here, as the new Lake Suwa SLGB007 bracelet now offers greater tapering than in previous models, making it both more pleasant to look at and to wear. Second, following its introduction on the Spring Drive UFA SLGB001 & SLGB003, this new model adopts a three-step micro-adjustment clasp, enabling precise, tool-free adjustments in 2mm increments for enhanced wearing comfort.
And talking about the UFA calibre, this is the second main evolution here as the SLGB007 replaces the 5-day power reserve calibre 9RA2 with the newest, even more precise Spring Drive Calibre 9RB2, also known as Ultra Fine Accuracy. Capable of an impressive ±3 seconds per month accuracy (or ±20 seconds per year), this movement is smaller and thinner, measuring 30mm in diameter and 5mm in thickness. This automatic Spring Drive engine relies on a single barrel, which delivers a comfortable power reserve of 72 hours (with a nicely integrated indicator on the back). The open back reveals the Shinshu Watch Studio’s signature finishing, with frosted plates and bridges that contrast with the polished bevelled edges.
Released as part of the permanent collection and available from September 2026, the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Collection Spring Drive UFA 40mm Lake Suwa SLGB007 will be priced at EUR 11,700. For more details, please visit www.grand-seiko.com.
