Lubricants for watch movements to reduce friction and wear of moving parts.

Originating in France, it’s a milky, opaque or colored glass used for luxury watch dials.

When a watch is stripped down to reveal the workings of the movement, reducing or even eliminating the dial while plates and bridges on the movement are hollowed out to expose gears, the balance wheel, escapement, etc. Watch hands that are minimized without center portions (just outline borders) are also referred to as open-worked. Also known as skeleton.

A specially balanced weight connected to automatic movements that rotates freely with the movement of the wearer’s wrist. This continuously winds the mainspring and keeps the watch running without the need for manual winding. Also known as a rotor.

A full clockwise and then counterclockwise swing of the balance wheel is one oscillation. Hertz measures the number of oscillations in one second, indicating the movement’s frequency.
