Inspired by Japan's first wristwatch, Seiko expands the Presage Classic Series with two elegant models showcasing traditional craftsmanship.
The Presage Classic collection has become Seiko’s showcase for traditional Japanese decorative arts. Within the collection, the Craftsmanship line celebrates centuries-old artisanal techniques through enamel, porcelain and urushi lacquer dials. This year, Seiko expands its catalogue with two refined additions that honour an important milestone in the company’s history: the 1913 Laurel, Japan’s first wristwatch. Reinterpreting key design elements of this historic model, the new Presage Classic continuous production references HCC005 and HCC006 offer classical styling with handcrafted dials.
The watches showcase different decorative techniques but share the same construction. Their 30m water-resistant cases measure 39.6mm in diameter and 12.4mm thick. The enamel model is finished in stainless steel with a super-hard coating, while the urushi version’s steel case receives a warm yellow gold-coloured finish. Both feature a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating and a screw-down exhibition caseback.
The HCC005 revisits the Laurel’s distinctive appearance with a glossy white enamel dial crafted using traditional techniques. Finely ground enamel is applied to a copper base and fired repeatedly at temperatures approaching 800°C, creating a surface prized for its remarkable depth, permanence and resistance to fading. Production is overseen by master enamel artisan Mitsuru Yokosawa, assisted by Kazunori Uchiyama, whose apprenticeship under Yokosawa ensures the continuity of this increasingly rare craft. The dial faithfully echoes the Laurel through elegant Arabic numerals, including the characteristic red “12”, a signature feature of Seiko’s historic wristwatch. The blue handset looks just right, and the 24-hour subdial is at 6 o’clock.
The HCC006 keeps the Laurel-inspired typography and layout but interprets the same historical design through the equally demanding art of urushi lacquer, which develops an unmistakable richness and lustre through successive layers of hand-applied lacquer and repeated polishing. Produced under the supervision of renowned lacquer master Isshu Tamura, with execution by Toshikazu Tsuji, Mitsuki Tsuji and their workshop, the dial combines deep black lacquer with gold-coloured numerals, indices and hands.
Both watches are powered by Seiko’s modern manufacture Calibre 6R5H. Operating at 21,600 vibrations/hour, the automatic movement delivers a 72-hour power reserve. The movement is visible through the sapphire caseback.
The watches are worn on a supple oil-tanned leather strap sourced from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries, closed with a three-fold deployant clasp. The new Seiko Presage Classic Series “Craftsmanship” Enamel Dial (HCC005) and Urushi Lacquer Dial (HCC006) will join the permanent collection and become available through Seiko Boutiques and selected retailers worldwide from September 2026. Why date, not small seconds ?
Seiko did what Seiko does best that is waste a great idea with a garbage design, they will never learn. It pains me to admit it as a fan of the brand, there have been bright spots but the dark force is still hiding in too many places.
