Following its global relaunch in 2024 with Patrik Hoffmann at the helm, Favre Leuba retains the spirit of its historical tool watches but with a new focus on extreme wearability. Famous for engineering innovative, well-equipped tool watches, Hoffmann has revisited some of Favre Leuba’s vintage stars in a more contemporary key with slimmer cases and practical everyday functions. The recently released Deep Raider Day Date fits the bill perfectly. Echoing the ultra-rugged tool watch heritage of its 1964 Deep Blue ancestor, the competent 300m Deep Raider Day Date diver is pitched as a sporty everyday companion with stylish gradient dials, interchangeable bracelets/straps and the incorporation of a day-date function. Following the wake of the inaugural steel editions, Favre Leuba releases three two-tone models in steel with yellow gold PVD accents.
The original 200m water-resistant Deep Blue dive watch of 1964, with its Bakelite timing bezel, has provided the blueprint for several sub-collections, including the faithful 39mm vintage-reissue Deep Blue Revival, the modernised and contemporary 40mm Deep Raider Renaissance, along with the Deep Raider Power Reserve.
Sharing the more modern aesthetic of the Deep Raider Renaissance, the Day Date retains its dive watch credentials with a more-than-respectable 300m depth rating but ups its everyday wearability with a series of stylish touches and a practical day-date function. The 40mm case with its integrated three-link bracelet has a relatively slim height of 12.5mm, not bad for a professional dive watch.
Presented in two-tone steel and yellow gold PVD cases, the watches feature golden accents on the fluted bezel, the crown, the middle link of the bracelet and certain elements of the dial. A predominant presence of vertical brushed surfaces underscores its sporty provenance, combined with a lively polished mid-case bevel and the polished golden features. In line with the two-tone spirit, the ceramic bezel insert, colour-matched to the dial, has golden numerals.
Unlike the top-to-bottom ombré dials of the earlier all-steel editions, the new blue and green dials feature a brushed sunray finish with a gradient effect, while the black reference is solid. Adding a more luxurious touch and heightened contrast, the central hands and the hourglass logo are treated with yellow gold PVD. All three variants feature a sandwich construction on the dial with a lower layer of Super-LumiNova emerging from beneath the elongated hour indices. Located at 3 o’clock, the rectangular date window is outlined in white with white discs. Adding a touch of versatility, the day and date functions, adjusted at the crown, can be displayed in either English or German.
Hidden by the screwed-down steel caseback, the watch is powered by the automatic FLD05 calibre (Sellita SW220-1), with a frequency of 28,800vph and a somewhat limited power reserve of 38 hours.
