Doxa and Art of Time Release the SUB 200 Dune
Following a sea-inspired model, Caribbean retailer Art of Time moves to the shores with the Dune edition.
Born in 1889, Doxa is a storied and highly respected brand, mostly in the diving community. As of 1967, and the launch of the SUB 300 (the first dive watch to feature a unidirectional rotating bezel to calculate and monitor no-stop dive times), Doxa gained incredible popularity in the field and continues to do so. But there’s more than the 300 to the brand, including less hardcore and more accessible models, such as the SUB 200. Last year, Doxa teamed up with St Marteen retailer Art of Time, releasing the attractive Caribbean-inspired SUB 200 Azure. Today, reinforcing this special bond, we have the next chapter, a beach-inspired model, the Doxa SUB 200 Dune.
Last year, family-owned Caribbean retailer Art of Time, based in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, commissioned a special edition of the Doxa SUB 200 named Azure and inspired by the island where it operates. Light blue dial, white sapphire bezel… Everything to evoke life at sea and sparkling blue Caribbean waters. The next chapter in the collaboration is the SUB 200 Dune, which moves out of water to explore sun-bleached beaches.
Sharing identical specifications to earlier editions of the Doxa SUB 200 and the Azure version, this sand-inspired watch has a 42mm steel case with a 13.8mm thickness and short, sweeping lyre lugs that make it wear smaller than its dimensions would indicate – 46mm lug-to-lug. The case is decorated with brushed surfaces and polished bevels and has a screwed steel caseback, a screw-down crown and 200m water-resistance.
To differentiate this SUB 200 Dune from classic models available from Doxa, the caseback, in steel and screwed to the case, has an engraved map of the Caribbean with blue laser oxidation finish. Also, the unidirectional diving bezel features a black sapphire insert, with a luminous 60-minute scale printed in sandy-beige Super-LumiNova.
The most obvious reference to the name of this watch is its dial. While retaining the same applied markers and hands as classic editions, the Doxa SUB 200 Dune for Art of Time comes with an unprecedented sand-grain textured dial, in a gradient, warm sand tone that evokes dunes under a tropical sun, shifting between sun-bleached taupe and warm bronze tones. To offer contrast day and night, the applied markers are filled with beige luminous material, and the hands are black toned.
Under the solid caseback is a simple, solid automatic movement, the Sellita SW200 (a clone of the ETA 2824). It beats at a 4Hz frequency and offers 38h of power reserve. The watch is delivered with Doxa’s signature stainless steel beads-of-rice bracelet (with folding clasp and dive suit extension) as well as an additional black rubber strap.
