The New Delma Montego Chronograph Black Editions

A good value in the automatic chronograph space, a tool watch with a touch of flair.

In 2022, the Lengnau watchmaker Delma returned the Montego, a bold, versatile chronograph with a racing-inspired edge defined by its prominent external tachymeter scale. Built as a genuine sports watch, it’s ready for adventure on land or underwater, thanks to its robust 200m water resistance. Initially launched in four dial colours, white, black, green, and blue, it was joined last year by a striking ice-blue “100-Year Limited Edition.” For 2025, Delma unveils a new take: an all-black PVD-coated stainless steel Montego. Sleek and stealthy, it’s accented with just the right dash of colour to keep its dynamic spirit alive, and we’re taking a first look.

The Black Edition retains the classic Montego’s 42mm case dimensions, but its full black PVD-coated stainless steel look gives it a more contemporary, even tactical, presence. At 16.2mm thick, it’s not slim on the wrist, but its proportions remain well-balanced, aided by the straight lugs and slightly recessed caseback. The wide tachymeter bezel, executed in crisp white over black, reinforces the watch’s racing DNA, while the screw-down crown and pump-style chronograph pushers (complete with knurled collars for grip) provide style and substance. Water resistance is a robust 200 meters, a notable feature for a chronograph in this category. The case is topped with a sapphire crystal; the transparent caseback reveals the automatic movement.

Delma has kept the classic 6-9-12 subdial layout from previous Montego models, dictated by the underlying movement’s design. At 3 o’clock sits a neatly integrated day-date double window, colour-matched to the main dial for a smart look. The dial is finished in black with a subtle sunray brushing. The Montego Black Edition is offered in three variants, each with either red, blue, or yellow accents on the minute track and the outer rings of the 30-minute and 12-hour counters and the running seconds subdial. It’s an effective way to inject energy into the otherwise monochromatic layout. Applied indices and the central hour and minutes hands are filled with white Super-LumiNova, maintaining low-light legibility.

The Delma Montego chronograph is powered by the Sellita SW500, a reliable automatic movement and a well-known Valjoux 7750 alternative. Beating at 28,800 vibrations/hour and offering a 48-hour autonomy, it’s a robust and familiar calibre. The movement is visible through the sapphire caseback, revealing a Delma-signed rotor adorned with Côtes de Genève-style striping, a welcome touch of refinement in an otherwise tool-oriented timepiece.

The Montego Black Edition is offered on a five-row stainless steel bracelet, also treated with black PVD to match the case. It’s secured with a folding clasp and safety pushers for added confidence.

Delma delivers a stealthy but spirited chronograph with the Montego Black Edition that balances performance and visual appeal. It doesn’t stray far from the Montego formula but adds enough edge and colour to feel fresh. The price is CHF 2,800 or EUR 3,125. For more information, please visit DelmaWatches.com.
