Same increased power, same refined movement and dial, new size.
Since its launch in 2022, the Citizen Tsuyosa (a Japanese word for strength) has been a strong success for the brand and is now a leading option in the value proposition segment. Originally released in 40mm steel cases with a 3-link steel bracelet and a rough-looking entry-level movement, Citizen has vastly expanded the collection over the years to add more refinement, more design options and more compact cases. Potentially the most comprehensive model in the range is the Tsuyosa 60 Automatic, an evolution on both the design and mechanical sides, adding a richer dial, a more pleasant-looking movement and more power. And next to the 40mm editions, we now have compact 37mm options.
The Tsuyosa watch didn’t come out of the blue. The brand’s European team launched it to offer an affordable alternative to the growing demand for elegant sports watches with integrated bracelets. A rather opportunistic strategy that proved successful… But also a watch with a certain legitimacy, since it is actually a modernised version of a watch launched in the 1990s: the NH-299 series. The earliest Tsuyosa models, the NJ015 series, were good-looking, fun, truly accessible (sub-300 euros), but not perfect either. The movement, entirely unfinished (not even coated), should have been kept hidden; the dials were a bit plain, and the bracelet was not of the best quality. That said, considering the price, nothing was to be seen as a deal breaker, but there was room for improvement. This was the mission of the Tsuyosa 60 Automatic.
Even though the price was slightly higher, the Tsuyosa 60 was packed with new features to justify the increase: more refined dials with texture, a new jubilee-style bracelet, a decent-looking movement and an extended power reserve. And now that Citizen has applied the recipe to the classic 40mm editions, it is time for the more compact, unisex model, the Tsuyosa 37mm, to receive the same treatment. The basics are the same: a barrel-shaped case with a raised bezel, a combination of brushed surfaces and polished accents, a 1970s-80s-driven design that plays on the trend of the luxury sports watch, now housed in a 37mm case, with a thickness of 11.5mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of about 43mm. The crown is still positioned at 4 o’clock and slightly recessed; the back keeps its see-through crystal, and the dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with a magnifying glass over the date. The water resistance, rated at 50m, is decent. No more.
As with the larger 40mm models, the Tsuyosa 60 Automatic 37mm receives a more refined dial, with an appealing stamped guilloché-like pattern. As we’ve seen with the larger versions, the texture is surprisingly intricate and detailed, and contributes significantly to the increased perceived value of this sub-collection. The hands and hour markers, still filled with a generous amount of luminescent material, are identical to those of the other Tsuyosa models.
Citizen releases the Tsuyosa 60 Automatic 37mm in 3 editions. The NK0030-51E is the most classic, with its steel case and bracelet, paired with a black dial. The NK0030-51X is also in full steel, this time with a light green, fresh-looking dial. Finally, the reference NK0032-56A adds a touch of bling with a gold-plated case and bracelet, paired with a silver-coloured dial and gold-coloured hands and markers.
Inside the case is the calibre 8310, an evolution of the calibre 8210 found in the inaugural Tsuyosa models. The main upgrade concerns the power reserve, which is now rated at 60 hours, or 20 hours more than before. It retains a 3Hz frequency and hacking seconds, as well as a claimed accuracy within -20/+40 seconds/day. Finally, the movement is now entirely rhodium-plated and features blue-coloured screws, an openworked rotor and stripes on the main bridge.
The last of the updates concerns the bracelet, as the 3-link element is here replaced by a brushed and polished multi-link, jubilee-style steel bracelet with a concealed butterfly clasp. Overall, an upgrade in terms of look and quality.
