A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Daymatic Honeygold
The automatic sibling of Lange 1 returns in the brand’s signature precious alloy.
For 2025, A. Lange & Söhne introduces a new, warm expression of the Lange 1 Daymatic, the automatic and practical version of one of the brand’s most emblematic timepieces, and a model that’s been discontinued in its classic versions. Revealed on December 7th, a date that marks both Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s founding of the Glashütte manufacture in 1845 and Walter Lange’s revival of the brand in 1990, this new edition, for the very first time, brings the automatic Lange 1 to life in the brand’s exclusive Honeygold alloy.
The Lange 1 Daymatic was first presented in 2010 as the self-winding companion to the emblematic hand-wound Lange 1, not simply an automatic version, but a reinterpretation of the design concept. Inverting the layout of the classic Lange 1, the Daymatic mirrors the dial so that the time display sits on the right-hand side, ensuring optimal viewing when the watch is worn beneath a shirt cuff. The power-reserve indicator, a hallmark of the manual Lange 1, was replaced by a retrograde day-of-week display; after all the Daymatic’s focus was on practicality.
Since its introduction, it has appeared in several editions: yellow gold with a champagne dial (Ref. 320.021), platinum with a rhodium dial (320.025), and white gold with a blue dial (320.028). Notable special editions include the Lange 1 Daymatic Tokyo Boutique Birthday Edition and the Daymatic 25th Anniversary. However, looking at the brand’s website, you’ll see that the classic versions of the Daymatic are nowhere to be found anymore, so this Honeygold version marks a return of the model.
Now, for the first time, the Daymatic appears in Lange’s proprietary Honeygold, a warm 18-carat gold alloy exclusive to the manufacture. With its luminous tone between yellow and rose gold, Honeygold is both elegant and distinctive, harder than conventional gold, yet beautifully lustrous. The 39.5mm case retains the graceful proportions of the collection, with a modest 10.4mm thickness, a narrow polished bezel, and fluidly curved lugs that ensure comfort and poise under a cuff.
The brown, solid-silver dial harmonises perfectly with the golden case. Its off-centred layout offering the hour and minute subdial positioned on the right, the subsidiary seconds at 8 o’clock, and the signature outsize date at 11 o’clock. The retrograde day-of-week display arcs across the left. Honeygold hands, appliques, and a date frame are in tune with the case’s hue. The white digits on a brown background give the outsize date a distinctive balance. The softly recessed time subdial ring and small seconds enhance visual depth, creating a dynamic effect typical of Lange’s dial design.
Powering the Daymatic Honeygold is the Lange manufacture automatic calibre L021.1, developed in-house for the model’s 2010 debut. It features a central rotor in 21k gold, adorned with the A. Lange & Söhne signature and weighted by a 950 platinum centrifugal mass to maximise winding efficiency. The calibre L021.1 consists of 426 components, with 67 jewels set in seven screwed gold chatons. The balance system employs a free-sprung balance wheel with eccentric poising weights and a Lange-manufactured hairspring, oscillating at 21,600 vibrations per hour. The power reserve is 50 hours when fully wound.
The movement reflects Lange’s hallmark aesthetic: Glashütte ribbing, polished bevels, and a hand-engraved balance cock. The movement’s architecture uses four individually screwed bridges, forming the appearance of a three-quarter plate, a tribute to Saxon watchmaking tradition while allowing optimal access during assembly and regulation.
The Lange 1 Daymatic Honeygold is offered on a taupe hand-stitched alligator leather strap, closed with a Honeygold prong buckle. Limited edition of 250 pieces, the price is upon request, as always with ALS. More information at alange-soehne.com.
