The New-Generation Ulysse Nardin Freak X; Smaller, More Versatile and with new Movement

Meet the evolution of the Ulysse Nardin Freak X: smaller, thinner, more robust, more sophisticated, more versatile and with in-house micro-rotor engine.

In 2019, Ulysse Nardin launched the Freak X. More compact, more accessible and equipped with a conventional crown, it retained the essence of the original Freak (no hands, no dial, and no crown) introduced in 2001 by visionary watchmaker Ludwig Oechslin, while adapting it for everyday wear and a broader clientele. Now, as the manufacture celebrates its 180th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the Freak, the brand unveils a completely reengineered, second-generation Freak X. Nearly every component has been reconsidered, from the movement and case construction to the winding system, finishing and ergonomics. What we have is a smaller, more refined and considerably more sophisticated Freak X that remains faithful to the original concept.

What Has Changed

Compared to the previous-generation Freak X, which you can rediscover here, the new model introduces important changes:

  • New manufacture calibre UN-232 (replacing the UN-230) with micro-rotor
  • 41mm case (down from 43mm)
  • 47.3mm lug-to-lug (down from 49.6mm)
  • Thickness reduced to 10.35mm (vs 10.7mm previously)
  • New monobloc case construction (replacing the previous modular architecture)
  • New glassbox sapphire crystal with a wider opening and enhanced view of the movement
  • Micro-rotor automatic winding (replacing the previous traditional winding rotor)
  • DIAMonSIL escapement (replacing the previous silicon escapement architecture)
  • 100m water-resistance (up from 50m)
  • Screw-down crown (replacing the standard pull-push crown)
  • Higher level of decoration and finishing throughout the case and movement
  • Quick-release interchangeable strap system (new feature)
  • New steel bracelet option (new for the Freak X collection)
  • 80% recycled steel construction on steel models

The Evolution of the Freak X, a New Manufacture Calibre

For this new generation of Freak X, Ulysse Nardin goes beyond cosmetic changes, even though quite a few executions since the model’s introduction were quite dazzling, like the Freak X Razzle Dazzle, the Silicium Marquetry edition, the Aventurine, the Enamel or the Crystalium. The Freak X now relies on an entirely new in-house movement, the calibre UN-232, developed specifically for the watch after more than two years of engineering and design work.

Although the watch remains familiar visually, the movement design beneath has been completely rethought. The new calibre UN-232 is more compact, more modular and designed with future developments in mind, allowing for decorative techniques and potential métiers d’art executions. One of the most important technical evolutions is the escapement. For the first time in a Freak X, Ulysse Nardin incorporates its DIAMonSIL technology. Developed by the manufacture as an extension of its pioneering work with silicon, DIAMonSIL combines silicon components with a diamond-like surface treatment that increases hardness, improves efficiency and reduces wear. By enhancing durability and reducing friction, the technology directly contributes to precision and long-term reliability. It was first launched in 2007 on the Freak DIAMonSIL.

The movement also retains the oversized silicon balance wheel and silicon hairspring that have become hallmarks of modern Freak models. Manufactured by SIGATEC, the silicon specialist co-founded by Ulysse Nardin, these components help deliver excellent stability and resistance to magnetic fields.

Perhaps the most visible mechanical change can be found on the reverse side of the watch. For the first time in the history of the Freak collection, automatic winding is handled by a fully integrated rose-gold micro-rotor. Replacing the previous traditional winding rotor, the new solution allows Ulysse Nardin to reduce the movement’s overall size while maintaining efficient winding. Visible through the sapphire caseback, the micro-rotor also brings a nice touch of warmth to the movement’s highly technical appearance.

The movement consists of 216 components, operates at 21,600 vibrations/hour and delivers a healthy 72-hour power reserve, no change here despite the more compact dimensions.

A Smaller, Better-Engineered Case

The original Freak X measured 43mm across. The new generation offers a far more wearable 41mm diameter, with a shorter 47.3mm lug-to-lug distance. With a thickness of just 10.35mm (13.6mm with the crystal), the watch sits more comfortably on the wrist.

The construction has also evolved. Previous Freak X models relied on a modular construction, whereas the new watch features a monobloc case available in 80% recycled steel or rose gold. According to Ulysse Nardin, this redesign improves structural rigidity and helps minimise the transmission of mechanical vibrations through the case, reducing operational noise and enhancing acoustic stability. The screwed plaque on the left is retained.

The new glassbox sapphire crystal also transforms the experience, with a wider opening and a more “immersive perspective”. Practicality has improved as well. The addition of a screw-down crown doubles water resistance from 50m to 100m, making the new Freak X better suited to daily wear and an active lifestyle.

Better Finishing

While technical innovation has always been central to the Freak concept, Ulysse Nardin has raised the level of execution with this new generation. The movement showcases a richer combination of satin-brushed, polished and grained surfaces, while hand-bevelled details appear on the oscillator bridge and time-indicating elements. Applied hour indices, replacing the markers, are filled with Super-LumiNova and bring additional depth to the display while improving legibility in low-light conditions. Other refinements include contrasting finishes across the bridges, the barrel, and the micro-rotor assembly.

Three Launch Models

Ulysse Nardin launches the collection with three new references. The Freak X Grey in a recycled steel case with a grey sandblasted hour disc is worn on a light brown calfskin strap. The Freak X Blue pairs a recycled steel case with a blue gradient satin-brushed hour disc and comes with the new integrated steel bracelet. The Freak X Gold features a rose-gold case, black sandblasted hour disc and is worn on a black alligator strap. All versions benefit from the new quick-release strap system.

Availability and Price

The 2026 Ulysse Nardin Freak X joins the permanent collection. The Freak X Grey (steel, leather strap) is priced at CHF 33,500 or EUR 37,500, the Freak X Blue (steel, integrated bracelet) is priced at CHF 34,500 or EUR 38,600, and the Freak X Gold (rose gold, alligator strap) will retail for CHF 52,000 or EUR 58,200.
