The UR-101 is the watch that started it all for indie brand Urwerk. First introduced in 1997 alongside the UR-102, it laid the groundwork for the brand’s signature wandering hours display and its radical approach to time indication. After recently bringing the UR-101 back into the collection with a bold, textured T-Rex edition, Urwerk moves in an entirely different direction with the new UR-101 Diamond Sky, demonstrating that the UR-101 is not a relic of the past, but a possibility for ongoing experimentation.

This latest UR-101 version retains the modern UR-101’s relatively compact, curved architecture, with a 41mm diameter and a slim 9.33mm profile. The case remains instantly recognisable, with its crown now at 12 o’clock (the original had it at 3 o’clock) and featuring a puller on the back for ease of use, short integrated lugs, and a domed profile. The steel case is engraved with a geometric network, into which 214 responsibly sourced diamonds (totalling 1.63 carats) are set, forming a constellation-like pattern. Water resistance is 30m.

With this sparkling, expressive exterior, the display remains faithful to the original concept. Under the arched sapphire crystal, time is indicated by two rotating satellites that carry the hours, which travel along a 180-degree minute track from left to right. As one hour completes its path, the next emerges, creating a continuous and fluid reading of time. It is the motion-over-static indication, a defining principle of Urwerk since its inception. Super-LumiNova on the numerals and markers ensures that the time remains easy to read.

The UR-101 is powered by the automatic calibre UR-1.01V, based on a Vaucher movement and adapted in-house to drive the in-house wandering hours module. Operating at 28,800 vibrations/hour and offering a 48-hour power reserve, it combines reliability with the technical demands of the satellite display. The movement uses a mix of materials, including brass, copper, and ARCAP, finished with sandblasting, snailing, and satin brushing.

The UR-101 Diamond Sky is worn on a white textured rubber strap with a black calfskin lining, closed with a steel pin buckle. Limited to 25 pieces, it represents a rare exploration of jewellery within Urwerk’s typically technical universe. Price is CHF 85,000 (excl. taxes). For more details, please visit www.urwerk.com.
