Urwerk to Auction the UR-111C Black Worn by Robert Downey Jr. for Charity
Urwerk helps raise funds with the Downey family for the third time.
Robert Downey Jr., a.k.a. Iron Man on silver screens, is well known for being a watch aficionado – in particular very cool watches from indie watchmakers, including Urwerk, as spotted here. Among these, the UR-111C Black was also spotted on his wrist at the premieres of Marvel’s Avengers Endgame in New York and Los Angeles. Urwerk is now auctioning this very watch to support Random Act Funding, a philanthropic organization founded by Susan and Robert Downey Jr.
Like all Urwerk creations, the UR-111C is unconventional. It is futuristic, highly technical and features a unique time display. Presented in 2018, this horological UFO is, however, a departure from the orbital wandering hour indication Urwerk is known for. Through three curved sapphire crystals at the front of the watch, the UR-111C shows jumping digital hours and two progressive minute displays. The seconds are indicated digitally via two discs under a so-called “image conduit”. The interface with the watch is disruptive too. There is no crown, in the traditional way. The winding mechanism is operated by a long, fluted cylinder integrated on the top of the case. Time setting is performed by pulling out a lever from the right side of the case.
Regarding today’s news, it is to be noted that it’s the third time Urwerk has helped raise funds with the Downey family. Last December, the UR-105 CT Iron worn by Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers Endgame sold for USD 312,500 at Phillips. All proceeds were donated to Random Act Funding, a philanthropic organization founded by Susan and Robert Downey, “dedicated to distributing kindness in the form of financial support at a local, national and global level.” Each year, Random Act Funding selects organizations that are really changing the world and grant them funds to support their projects.
The third watch to be auctioned by Urwerk and Downey Jr. is a UR-111C Black, a limited edition of just 25 pieces. The original sales price was CHF 130,000. The present example was worn by Robert Downey Jr. on several public appearances. It is identical in all points to a standard model, with the exception of one cool detail, the watch is engraved RDJ on the back.
Downey’s Urwerk UR-111C Black will be auctioned to the highest bidder on the Urwerk Pre-owned platform (requiring a login). It is a private auction for which Urwerk owners have been invited to bid until February 24th. Still, if you’re interested and are a serious bidder, you can get in touch with Urwerk using their contact form. And whether you are a fan of Marvel Comics or not, this is a super cool watch and a great opportunity to treat yourself while supporting a good cause.
