Urban Jurgensen 2140 White Gold Black Guilloche Dial - Baselworld 2018

It is no secret that we are big fans of Urban Jürgensen at MONOCHROME watches. Inspired by a century-old history, the singularity of the Swiss/Danish brand lies in a distinctive perception of elegance where craftsmanship, integrity and patience are carefully preserved. The latest addition to the Jules collection, the reference 2140 WG is no exception. This elegant three-hander is delivered in a tastefully restrained white gold case housing a handcrafted guilloché black dial.

The 40mm white gold case features a stepped profile and a concave bezel topped by a slightly domed sapphire crystal. A three-piece construction, it features the brand’s “contemporary” lugs that are individually forged and soldered. Originally introduced with the Jules collection (and with some “cornes de vache” inspiration) the lugs bring a modern, more dynamic touch. Perfectly finished, they truly come alive on the wrist creating a superb interplay of light. The crown is well-proportioned to allow easy operations. It is engraved with the Urban Jürgensen hallmark.

This elegant case is paired with a remarkable handcrafted guilloché dial. The attention to detail on the layout of the dial is evident. Everything seems to be situated in just the right place. Presented in black, it is made from a single piece of solid silver, combining different patterns (grains d’orge and damier/veux panier) that add a great sense of depth and richness. It is understated at first, but extremely detailed when closely observed… An engraved cartouche for the logo, faceted baton-style indices applied by hand and mirror-pearled minute indicators set the final touch. The smallest details have been developed to perfection and the manufacturing of a single dial requires 700 operations and two full-days of work.

The hands come in the characteristic style of Urban Jürgensen. These are meticulously handcrafted and fashioned out of white gold. The emblematic ‘eye’ on the hour hand is diamond polished (more information about how hands are manufactured at Urban Jürgensen here).

The 2140 WG is powered by the proprietary P4 calibre. Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, this twin barrel movement boasts a healthy 72-hour power reserve. As you have come to expect from Urban Jürgensen, the finishing is superb. A look through the sapphire case back provides ample evidence of this and reveals finely chamfered bridges with Geneva stripes radiating from the balance wheel. The full cock is openwork allowing a view of the large variable inertia balance wheel. The screws are thermally blued; the jewel sinks and the recesses are finely hand-polished. The P4 calibre drives the central hours and minutes hands and the small seconds at 6 o’clock, while the stop seconds mechanism allows for precise adjustment.

  1. A good novelty for someone doesn’t like tear-drop lugs(1140) or date(2240).

  2. I love the “hour eye”, so readable……the lugs are truly unique.
    Art. Thank You Mr. Markl.
