Unique Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Barakuda for Only Watch 2019

Blancpain has been a long-time supporter of Only Watch. For the 2019 edition of the biennial fundraiser for research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the brand presents a unique version of its Fifty Fathoms Barakuda. The timepiece is reinterpreted with blue accents, in reference to the official colour of the charity’s eighth edition.

Launched in 1953, the Fifty Fathoms is one of the watches that defined the archetype of the modern dive watch. Blancpain regularly revisits this iconic watch, reinterpreting different versions. This year, the brand re-edited the Barakuda, a rare model from the 1960s delivered to the German Bundesmarine. With a distinctive vintage look and vibe, this limited edition stood out with its red/old radium rectangular hour markers. The Only Watch 2019 unique piece eschews these colours for pale blue, the official colour of the 2019 edition of the charity auction. Even if it doesn’t have such a pronounced vintage feel as the Barakuda re-edition, it looks really good.

Just like the Barakuda limited edition, the unique piece for Only Watch 2019 comes in a 40mm steel case. It features a domed unidirectional rotating bezel and a domed sapphire crystal. The watch is water-resistant to 300m. Inside is the automatic calibre 1151. This well-known twin-barrel calibre runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and has a healthy 100-hour power reserve. Visible via the exhibition caseback, its blackened rotor is personalized for Only Watch.

The Blancpain Barakuda for Only Watch 2019 is presented on a tropical-type rubber strap very much in the spirit of the historical model. It looks good and it is a cool one-off Fifty Fathoms. Good reasons to treat yourself and support a good cause. The estimate is of EUR 12,000 to EUR 18,000. For more information, please visit www.blancpain.com.
