The Updated Hamilton Khaki Field King Collection
A more versatile, civilian take on Hamilton’s rugged Khaki Field watch.
Hamilton is an American-born Swiss watch brand whose Khaki Field collection draws on its military heritage, featuring a clean, highly legible field watch design inspired by watches made for soldiers and outdoor use. Building on Hamilton’s transition from military supplier to civilian watchmaker, the new Khaki Field King is a slightly more refined, versatile model designed to move effortlessly from the field to everyday wear, and it comes with an affordable price tag.
The Khaki King emerged after WWII as Hamilton shifted its focus to service a civilian audience while retaining its rugged, highly legible Field watch attributes. Today, Hamilton’s Khaki Field “go anywhere, do anything” collection is represented by the Khaki Aviation, Khaki Field and Khaki Navy families, each designed for rugged performance in their respective terrains.
The latest recruitments shed their overt military design cues. Compared to earlier editions, the new Khaki Field King dispenses with certain dial features to create a cleaner, less busy dial. While the 40mm stainless steel case retains the sweeping rounded crown protectors, the flat round bezel and alternating brushed and polished finishes, the case is slightly thicker at 11.8mm, and water-resistance has been increased to 100 metres.
Available in green, blue or black sun-brushed dials, some elements have been removed and redesigned. Starting from the periphery, Hamilton has simplified the precision minutes track by removing the numerals but retains the Super-LumiNova plots at 5-minute intervals. The 24-hour track has also been eliminated, allowing the signature day-date display at noon and the prominent Arabic numerals to become the centre of attention. The day-date window is deliberately set against a white background for enhanced legibility.
With just two different finishes – snailing on the peripheral track and a sunburst dial – the dial appears more relaxed and is even easier to read. The signature syringe-shaped hour and minute hands, filled with Super-LumiNova and the arrow-tipped seconds hand have been retained.
Powered by the Hamilton H-40 automatic with a robust 80-hour power reserve, the movement shares its core design principles with Swatch Group’s calibre 80, also known as Powermatic 80, optimised with a more efficient mainspring barrel, a reduced frequency of 21,600vph and an anti-magnetic Nivachron balance spring.
The new Khaki Field King models feature a steel movement holder for additional resilience and reliability, and an upgraded bracelet construction. The watch is available with a 3-row steel bracelet and a folding clasp or paired with a brown leather strap with white top-stitching and a pin buckle.
The full-steel editions retail for CHF 730 / EUR 825, while the Khaki Field Kings on a leather strap retail for CHF 650 or EUR 745. More information at hamiltonwatch.com.
