The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Moon, now in an Elegant 36mm Pink Gold Case
One of the most emblematic JLC models is back in an elegant downsized gold version.
When thinking about the most emblematic watches produced by Jaeger-LeCoultre, some might, of course, mention the Reverso or the Memovox immediately. That said, the Master collection must be included in the list, whether we’re talking about the Master Control collection that debuted in 1992, or the more recent, more elegant and more slender Master Ultra Thin. Among these, the moon and date model has long been the sweet spot in the collection, combining refined style and appealing complications. Long available mostly in 39mm cases, it returned in a more compact 36mm steel version a couple of years ago, and now the Master Ultra Thin Moon 36mm is presented in a highly elegant pink gold version.
The Master Ultra Thin Moon is amongst the most classic watches by JLC. It has been around for many years, and its balanced, discreet design, paired with the elegance of its display, has been applied to multiple versions, such as steel, gold or, more recently, a grained salmon dial. But as said, mostly in a 39mm case, which never felt particularly large, but also never entirely appropriate in my books, especially for a gold watch. Somehow, it always wanted the gold version, just like the steel model, to be a bit more compact, a bit more old-school. Well, here we are with a new gold Master Ultra Thin Moon 36mm.
Like all the watches in the collection, this new edition retains a sleek, timeless design, with clean lines, polished surfaces, a smooth bezel and long, curving lugs that give it a classic, contemporary dress watch look. But now, the gold edition is back in a diameter that I would qualify as compact – and I’ll wait until seeing it in the metal before calling it perfect… Made of warm, refined 18k pink gold, all the surfaces of this 9.3mm-thick case are polished, with sapphire crystals to be found on both sides of the watch. Water-resistance is rated at 50m, sufficient for such a dress watch.
The dial of this new Master Ultra Thin Moon 36mm couldn’t be more classic either… Silver-coloured, sunray-brushed, with gold-coloured hardware. Of course, having the same movement as the 39mm model housed in a smaller case means that the sub-dial at 6 o’clock, which pairs a moon phase indication with a date by hand, sits closer to the edge of the dial and that no marker at 6 o’clock is required anymore. No complaints here, on the contrary. For the rest, the watch shows no surprises, with its gold-coloured Dauphine hands and trapezoidal hour markers, as well as a pearl-like minute track.
Inside the case, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 925 is still in place. This modern movement runs at a 4Hz frequency and boasts a comfortable 70h power reserve – an evolution compared to older generations of this watch. This calibre, which is among the mainstays of the brand’s collection, is elegantly decorated with Côtes de Genève, bevelled bridges and blue screws, as well as an openworked 22k pink gold rotor with the JL logo. The watch is worn on a classic black alligator leather strap, which can be easily interchanged (quick-release on the strap and the pin buckle).
Now available from the permanent collection, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Moon 36mm Pink Gold is priced at EUR 23,900, CHF 19,800 or USD 23,100, which is about 4,500 euros less than the 39mm gold editions. For more details, please visit www.jaeger-lecoultre.com.
