The Gold Allure of the New Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding 35mm

A luxurious, monochromatic gold-on-gold look illuminated by diamonds.

The Overseas is Vacheron Constantin’s luxury sports watch proposal, a well-furnished collection that was redesigned in 2016 and now boasts a wide selection of models for men and women. Complemented by automatic, anti-magnetic movements and finished to Vacheron’s exceptional standards, the versatility of the family is underscored by its winning DIY system to change the mood of the watch with any of the three bracelets/straps provided. During Watches & Wonders 2023, Vacheron introduced two smaller, slimmer-sized Overseas Self-Winding models – 34.5mm and 35mm diameter x 9.3mm thickness – to cater to smaller wrist sizes, with or without diamond-set bezels. The latest Overseas is a luxurious 35mm full-gold watch with a golden dial and a sparkling diamond-set bezel.

Vacheron’s Overseas luxury sports watch collection has a fascinating history. When it surfaced in 1977 for the brand’s 222 anniversary (revisited in 2022), it quickly established itself as a member of the Holy Trinity of luxury sports watches alongside the Royal Oak and the Nautilus. You can read all about its evolutions in our in-depth Part 1 and Part 2 coverage of the model, but for those in the know, we are looking at the third-generation Overseas launched in 2016. The powerful design of the case is built around a hexagonal, notched and polished bezel evoking the insignia Maltese Cross logo of the brand resting on a tonneau-shaped case.

The 35mm pink gold case has a slim height of 9.3mm and displays the stacked geometric shapes we associate with the Overseas. The tonneau case is surmounted by a circular plinth supporting the six-sided bezel designed to resemble the truncated arms of the brand’s Maltese Cross logo. Attracting light to the case and dial, the bezel is set with 90 brilliant-cut diamonds.

Impeccably finished, the surface of the case is vertically brushed, while the plinth has circular brushing to contrast with the mirror-polished gleam of the bezel. The finishings extend to the integrated pink gold bracelet with its flat brushed surfaces and hand-polished bevels. To ensure the 150m water-resistance rating of the case, the crown is screwed-down.

In a departure from the blue or dusty pink dial tones of the other 35mm Overseas models, the golden dial of this 35mm matches the warm radiant glow of the pink gold case and bracelet. Decorated with a sunburst satin-brushed finish, the golden lacquered dial blends with the pink gold case to produce an elegant monochromatic effect.

The 18k pink gold markers are applied to the velvety minutes track and extend into the sun-brushed area of the dial. Like the hour and minute hands, the indices are treated with blue-emitting Super-LumiNova. The truncated hour marker at 3 o’clock makes space for the framed date window with a white background and black numerals.

Vacheron’s in-house 3.83mm-thick calibre 1088/1 powers the hours, minutes and seconds of this 35mm model. With 144 components and a 4Hz frequency, the automatic movement delivers a 40h power reserve and has a soft iron casing ring for anti-magnetic protection. Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback is the signature 22k gold rotor decorated with a compass rose.

Price

The Overseas Self-Winding 35mm rose gold is delivered with the three bracelet/strap options mentioned above and retails for EUR 63,500.
