The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date is the brand’s hallmark aviator’s watch, introduced in 1938 and characterised by an oversized crown and a central pointer hand that indicates the date around the perimeter. However, the collection includes more than one Big Crown Pointer Date, with variants defined by their movements and design cues. The model released today corresponds to the accessible core range, recently interpreted with a more contemporary look and powered by the automatic calibre 754 with a Sellita base. The standout feature is the rich oxblood red dial, similar to the vintage-inspired Big Crown Pointer Date model.

In addition to a variety of case sizes, dial colours and case materials, the Big Crown Pointer Date is organised into several tiers by movement. For most, the classic vintage-inspired model with an oversized crown, a fluted bezel, cathedral hands and the Sellita-based automatic calibre 754 is the face of the family. However, there is a second, more contemporary line of Big Crown models powered by the same movement with smooth bezels, modern dial colours and H-link steel bracelets.

The new oxblood red dial comes in a 40mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 12mm, a lug-to-lug span of 47.5mm and a 50m depth rating. The brushed case features the family’s signature oversized, fluted crown, polished to match the case flanks and the smooth bezel framing the dial. The dial is protected by a domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating inside, and the caseback has a see-through mineral glass.

The powerful oxblood red tone of the dial provides dynamic contrast to the white Arabic numerals for the date and hours. The hours are raised and treated with white Super-LumiNova matching the 5-minute triangles on the railway-style minutes track and the interior of the pencil-shaped hour and minute hands. The tip of the arrow-shaped pointer hand is red, and the central seconds hand is white.

Power is provided by the Oris 754, an automatic movement based on the Sellita SW 200-1, complete with the brand’s signature red oscillating weight. It operates at 28,800vph and offers a 41-hour power reserve. The watch joins the permanent collection and retails for CHF 2,000. More information at oris.ch.
