Last year was an important year for Citizen for several reasons, one of which was the relaunch of the Series 8 collection of watches. This marked the return to mechanical watches under the Series 8 moniker and brought forth the 830, 831 and 870 models. This trio of steel sports watches all featured an angular, faceted case with alternating finishes. The three stood out from one another in key areas like the bezels, dials or materials. New for 2022, and celebrating the first birthday of the relaunch, is the Citizen Series 8 870 First Anniversary Limited Edition.
To say this new limited edition has a dramatically different look would be a bit of an understatement. Sure it features the same overall shape and design, but the 40.8mm wide and 11.4mm tall case is now fully coated in black Duratect DLC with a brushed and polished finishing. The two-piece stainless steel bezel is also coated in black, and a sapphire crystal covers both dial and movement.
The dial is made from lightweight, durable carbon. The natural pattern of the material can be seen waving around across the dial. The indices alternate in design and size between the even and odd hours, and have a small patch of Super-LumiNova on the outer edge of them. The faceted hour and minute hands are done in black, with a luminous insert, and a needle-like seconds hand. At 3 o’clock there’s a framed date window.
The Citizen Series 8 870 Mechanical First Anniversary L.E. relies on the Citizen 0950 in-house made automatic movement. It has 24 jewels, runs at a frequency of 28.800vph and offers 50 hours of autonomy. The see-through caseback reveals a contrasting winding rotor with broad Geneva stripes. Citizen states it is regulated to run within -5 and +10 seconds per day, and the fact it has strong anti-magnetic properties, yet doesn’t mention to what level.
The Citizen Series 8 870 Mechanical First Anniversary L.E. is worn on an integrated black rubber strap with a folding buckle. It is limited to 700 pieces worldwide and will be available in Autumn/Winter 2022. The exact price remains to be confirmed (expect around USD 2,000)
