The Tangens Komposition Automatic, an Accessible Automatic Sports Watch from Denmark

The same Komposition with its retro-inspired sports watch feel, now with an automatic movement and a thinner case.

Danish microbrand Tangens was founded in 2023, and it did not take long for it to get going. A year later, it introduced the Komposition, a watch that quietly found its audience thanks to its neat, geometric design and a vintage sports watch aesthetic. The Komposition is an easy watch to wear, and so far, it has been a quartz-based model. Now, the model returns as the Komposition Automatic, which is exactly what many people had been asking for, especially those who liked the design but wanted something mechanical. The latest version stays in line with the original, keeping that simple mix of retro and modern that made the watch click in the first place.

The change here is mostly under the hood. Tangens swaps the quartz for a Japanese Miyota 9039, giving an automatic movement to the Komposition. Its case is now 38mm, which is a touch smaller. Matte Steel, Juniper Green, and Bright White are the three versions of the Komposition Automatic, and the pricing also continues to impress. Where the quartz models were positioned around USD 250, the automatic versions move to roughly USD 400.

Coming to its case, it still has those sharp edges and flat surfaces that give it a more architectural design. Adding to this is the integrated feel between the case and bracelet, something that works well with the slightly compact 38mm size. The Komposition Automatic measures 10.45mm thick with a 45.5mm lug-to-lug and a 20mm lug width, which keeps it well balanced on the wrist. In steel, the case follows a three-part construction, with a water resistance of 100 metres, making it more than capable for daily wear.

The bracelet continues in the same material and design language, keeping that seamless look intact. It comes fitted with a butterfly clasp and uses quick-release spring bars, making it easy to swap out if needed, although it feels most at home on the bracelet it was designed with. On the dial, the running seconds subdial at 6 o’clock seen on the quartz version is gone, which gives the dial a classic three-hander look.

Each of the three versions has a slightly different feel. The Bright White and Juniper Green dials use a coarse dégradé finish with a sandblasted texture, while the Matte Steel version goes for a brushed finish. All three remain highly legible with clean markers and hands filled with Super-LumiNova. The dial is also paired with a sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating.

Powering the Komposition Automatic is the Miyota 9039, an automatic movement that is widely used in this segment for a good reason. Reliable and relatively slim, this engine runs at 28,800vph and offers a power reserve of around 42 hours. The Komposition Automatic is priced at EUR 549 (incl. taxes) or USD 407.20 (excl. taxes), and is available via Tangens’ website. For more information, please visit tangens-watches.com.
