The New All-Blue Seiko Prospex Diver 200m Samurai SRPL53

Using the more compact, revamped Samurai from last year, Seiko adds a touch of blue to the collection.

What you see is quite literally what you get with this new Samurai by Seiko. Born as the more edgy, contemporary counterpart to Seiko’s many heritage-inspired dive watches, the Samurai was introduced in 2004 and redesigned completely in 2024. Now, a year onward from the burgundy and black models that introduced us to a smaller Samurai, the collection grows with a new all-blue model. Here’s a rundown of the new Seiko Prospex Diver 200M Samurai SRPL53.

Last year, for the Samurai’s 20th anniversary, the whole design was revamped, with a more compact case size (width and height), slimmer lugs, and so on. And it wasn’t really marginal, as the diameter dropped over 2mm, for instance. The matte finished stainless steel case measures 41.7mm across, 12.3mm top to bottom and 49.5mm lug-to-lug. A change of colour is found on the unidirectional bezel, as it now has a blue insert. Rounding things off is a Hardlex crystal on top, a screw-down crown with a stout pair of guards and 200m of water-resistance.

Other than the colour, there’s no real change to the dial. What was burgundy red or black before is now simply turned blue. The new markers and hands set in play with last year’s update make an obvious appearance here as well. The result is a crisp and highly legible dial, with LumiBrite to aid night-time visibility. The date window is positioned between 4′ and 5′, and has a disc that always aligns the date digit upright instead of at an angle.

Hiding underneath the familiar closed caseback with wave medallion is the Calibre 4R35 automatic. This beats at a rate of 21,600vph and has a power reserve of 41 hours. We feel it could do with an update concerning the running time, yet it does what it has to do. The accuracy is rated at -35/+45 seconds per day, which doesn’t sound all that impressive, but it’s well known that most Seiko movements run well within the specified parameters.

As expected, the new Seiko Prospex 200M Diver Samurai SRPL53 comes on the same three-link stainless steel bracelet we’ve seen last year. This is secured to the wrist with a folding clasp that includes a diving extension. It’s added to the permanent collection and will be available from retailers from July 2025 onwards. The new blue Samurai will retail for EUR 650, which should still be considered a very fair price for a capable diver such as this one!
