A rather obvious pink take inspired by the famous fictional animated character.
With its 5 Sports collection, the brand’s accessible range that comprises almost infinite styles, Seiko isn’t shy of creating bold models and teaming up with unexpected partners. Recently, we’ve seen models inspired by Bruce Lee, Peanuts or Mooneys. There was even a pair of Pepsi-bezel watches made with… Pepsi! Now, the Seiko 5 Sports SKX series turns its attention to one of the most famous fictional animated characters, The Pink Panther. And as you can imagine, this new limited edition SRPM07, based on the compact SKX 38mm series, is very, very pink.
Since debuting in the opening of the 1964 film The Pink Panther, this beloved character has become one of the most famous and most recognisable comics of all time. Cool yet curious, mischievous, and full of charm, the Pink Panther has brought smiles to generations, specifically with the 1960s series of movies with Peter Sellers as Inspector Jacques Clouseau, and later as a dedicated cartoon series that amplified its fame. Now, 62 years after its debut, the beloved pink character appears on the dial of a Seiko watch that’s, obviously, pink-themed.
Bright, playful and clearly inspired by the Pink Panther, this new limited edition SRPM07 is based on the compact version of the Seiko 5 Sports SKX Series, a collection that we have reviewed here. Measuring 38mm in diameter and 44mm lug-to-lug, we’re looking at a nicely sized sports watch with aquatic inspiration, loosely based on the design of the SKX007 watch, without its proper diving credentials. Most of the specifications for this Pink Panther edition remain identical, meaning a Hardlex crystal on top framed by a unidirectional bezel with a metal insert and 60-minute scale, a push-pull crown at 4 o’clock and a comfortable 100m water-resistance.
What sets this Seiko 5 Sports Pink Panther apart starts with the bezel, with a dedicated font for the scale, which is, obviously, coloured in pink. Next is the dial. It’s pink, of course, and features the iconic footprints that lead the Little Man to discover the Pink Panther, a fun touch that adds to the theme of the watch. The rest of the dial is classic Seiko 5 Sports, with raised hour markers and hands filled with LumiBrite, a day-date indicator and a pink-accented seconds hand.
The back of the watch, with a pink-toned crystal and Pink Panther logo, shows the calibre 4R36, a tried-and-tested in-house automatic movement running at 3Hz and storing 41h power reserve. Last but not least, while the Pink Panther Limited Edition SRPM07 is worn on a classic 3-link steel bracelet with a folding clasp, the dedicated presentation box also includes a nylon NATO-like strap featuring the Pink Panther’s footprints and the phrase “Wet Paint” as seen in the original animation.
