The new Seiko 5 Sports Mooneyes Limited Edition SRPL39
A bold and yellow-themed watch that's inspired by the custom car culture.

While the Prospex collection of Seiko tends to play on the serious side of things with pro-oriented tool watches, the Seiko 5 Sports range has been a great field for creativity for the brand, using it to create dozens of collaborative projects with brands, artists or franchises. Fun, accessible, fairly robust and with a design inspired by the cult SKX007, Seiko has found a recipe to make them adaptable to all conditions and to the third party involved for limited editions. The latest one, the reference SRPL39, is a shared take on the SKX series that plays on the hotrod and custom vehicle vibe, with a bold black-and-yellow theme.
MOONEYES is a bit of a cult brand, specifically in the world of hot rods. Created by Dean Moon (1927-1987) in California, Mooneyes started as a brand – first MOON Equipment Company, later MOONEYES – to produce and sell parts for race cars. Dean Moon was a hot-rodder who built and raced cars from El Mirage Dry Lake and Bonneville Salt Flats to the drag strips and established a company that became an icon in the hot rodding industry. The brand was paused after he died in 1987, but in the early 1990s, Shige Suganuma, a long time Mooneyes dealer from Japan and close family friend of Moon, restarted the company as MOON of JAPAN (later MOONEYES) and continued to sell parts and hold American cultural events in Japan and abroad as an evangelist of hot rod culture.
Today, Seiko brings a new collaboration watch together with Japanese company MOONEYES… And if that SRPL39 is based on the classic Seiko 5 Sports SKX Series, the influence of the hot rod company is… undeniable. As for the case, no major changes as we still find the diver-inspired shape and specs, with a rather large diameter of 42.5mm yet a short L2L measurement of 46mm. Brushed and polished, the case is made of stainless steel, features a push-pull crown at 4 o’clock with guards, a see-through back and a comfortable 100m water-resistance. The crystal is Hardlex, not sapphire.
What makes this 5 Sports Mooneyes Limited Edition SRPL39 unique are several design elements, starting with the black-and-yellow racing-inspired rotating bezel, made of glossy, transparent acrylic with a geometric 60-minute scale printed on the underside. Next is the dial, with its bright brushed yellow background and transparent MOONEYES logos printed to create a pattern. The hands and markers are classic 1970s-styled with thin Lumibrite inserts and the day-date function is framed by an old-school metallic element. The caseback is decorated with an eye-catching logo mark, and the movement can be seen through the translucent yellow glass.
Power comes from the in-house entry-level calibre 4R36, an automatic 3Hz movement with stop-seconds function and 41h power reserve. The Mooneyes Limited Edition SRPL39 is delivered with a 3-link brushed steel bracelet with a folding clasp, as well as a yellow and black striped nylon strap with the MOONEYES logo. A special presentation box has also been created that resembles an old garage.
A limited edition of 1,500 pieces available from May 2025, the price of the Seiko 5 Sports Mooneyes SRPL39 is EUR 450 or GBP 390. For more details, please visit seikowatches.com.
