Although Rado is synonymous today with high-tech ceramic watches, it got a head start in innovative materials with the launch of its DiaStar model in 1962. Made from brightly polished tungsten carbide sintered under intense heat, it was the world’s first scratch-proof watch. A child of its time, the futuristic flying saucer case featured a round sapphire crystal porthole over the dial – another innovative choice given the predominance of mineral and polymer glass. Revisited for its 60th anniversary in 2022 in Ceramos, and following the brightly coloured summer editions, Rado dresses the DiaStar Original Skeleton for autumn with the release of two golden-toned models.

The two autumnal models come in Rado’s proprietary Ceramos, a high-tech ceramic and metal composite that combines the shatterproof toughness of metal with the extreme scratch resistance and lightweight properties of high-tech ceramic. Presented for the first time in a warm rose gold colour and a familiar yellow gold tone, the convex Ceramos bezel is PVD-coated and radially brushed for a sportier look.

Like earlier editions, the helmet-shaped case measures 38mm across with a length of 45mm and a height of 11.9mm. The middle case, caseback, bracelet and crown are made of stainless steel with a polished gold-coloured PVD coating, and the water-resistance rating is 100 metres. Another distinctive DiaStar feature is the hexagonally faceted sapphire crystal over the dial, forming a central square with sloping flanks.

The skeletonised automatic calibre R808 is coated in a golden colour, with a horizontally brushed train bridge to match the bezel’s finish. Attached to the black or brown annular ring on the periphery with white minute markings, the golden hour markers are suspended over the movement. To assist legibility, the golden indices and hour and minute hands are treated with white Super-LumiNova. Perched at 9 o’clock is the brand’s signature gold pivoting Rado anchor.

The caseback features a sapphire crystal revealing the golden anchor-shaped rotor decorated with Geneva stripes. The automatic R808 calibre (a modified, skeletonised variant of the ETA Powermatic 80 family) has a Nivachron hairspring to protect the movement from magnetic fields and temperature fluctuations, is regulated in five positions and delivers a robust power reserve of 80 hours.

The autumn-themed DiaStar Original Skeleton references are paired with a sporty brown rubber strap and gold-coloured PVD-coated steel pin buckle. The EasyClip interchangeable system makes the strap easy to swap. They retail for EUR 2,600 or USD 2,700. More information at rado.com.
