The new Piaget Andy Warhol Watch Collage Limited Edition

An abstract Warhol-inspired Piaget, with an artistic canvas made from hard stones.

Last November, Piaget announced entering a licensed collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. This allowed the brand to officially rename its cult 1970s black tie dress watch “The Andy Warhol Watch.” Indeed, the revolutionary artist, undisputed king of Pop Art, was the owner of 7 Piaget watches, including a 45mm yellow gold cushion-shaped watch with stepped gadroons and a galvanised anthracite-coloured dial he acquired in 1973… About a year later, Piaget unveils a limited edition of 50 pieces, inspired by a Collage artwork of the artist.

Piaget is a multifaceted brand, known for the richness of its identity. There is, of course, the brand’s unique watchmaking legacy and its expertise in crafting ultra-thin movements. Piaget is also admired for its expressive, daring designs of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly its vibrant stone dials and its natural affinity with the international jet set, notably the glittering circles of New York, where Yves Piaget moved with ease among artists, collectors, and style icons… Among the members of this Piaget Society was Andy Warhol, one of the most visible figures of New York’s cultural life and the undisputed king of the Pop Art movement. An avid collector, Warhol owned seven Piaget watches, including the now-iconic cushion-shaped model he acquired in 1973, once known as the Ref. 15102 and then as the Black Tie.

Half a century later, as Piaget has entered into a partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the “Warhol” moniker of this cult, stylish cushion-shaped model has been made official since November 2024. A year later, the brand unveils its first dedicated limited edition created in collaboration with the Foundation.

The Andy Warhol Watch Collage Limited Edition stands out with a dial arranged into an abstract form inspired by one of Warhol’s most celebrated Polaroid collage self-portraits from 1986. In coherence with the Piaget expertise and tradition of exotic dial materials, this composition is a colourful marquetry of black onyx, yellow Namibian serpentine, pink opal and green chrysoprase. The 45mm stepped case is made of yellow gold, a nod to Warhol’s own watch. Turning the watch over, the solid caseback is secured by 8 screws. It features a vertical satin finish, and it is emblazoned with a representation of a Warhol collage.

“We spent six months researching Andy Warhol before we settled on a direction,” says Stéphanie Sivrière, Piaget’s Artistic Director. “With such a wealth of material to draw on, it was extremely difficult to know where to begin. Should we look to one of his most famous works and iterate on a banana, a can of soup, or perhaps Marilyn Monroe? We quickly learned that we wanted to express Warhol, but without being obvious. To suggest, rather than to show. For their part, the foundation encouraged us to approach the project with freedom and to interpret Warhol in Piaget’s expressive, unbounded style. The result is a watch that tells the story of our collaboration but that stands on its own as a piece of watchmaking art, a collectable inspired by one of history’s most prolific collectors.”

Like previous versions of the model, the Collage Limited Edition is powered by the Piaget calibre 501P1. This in-house, extra-thin calibre is derived from the 430P but adapted (among other changes) to offer automatic winding. With a diameter of 20.8mm, it is only 3.63mm in thickness. It runs at a 4Hz frequency and boasts 40 hours of power reserve.

The Piaget Andy Warhol Watch Collage is released in a limited edition of 50 pieces. It comes on a green alligator leather strap with a yellow gold pin buckle. Price is set at CHF 67,000. For more details, please consult Piaget.com.
