The New Panerai Luminor Marina PAM01759, A Clean, Purpose-Built Return to Form
A 44mm steel Luminor Marina with domed crystal, no-date dial, in-house calibre and cool vintage design.
There’s been a feeling in recent years that the Officine has lost a bit of its edge and true spirit. Too bold, too modern, too technical… It felt like the Firenze-based brand was searching for its true meaning. However, Panerai’s latest releases, such as the PAM05218, a re-edition of the cult 1993 Luminor Marina Militare, or the compact GMT Ceramica 40mm PAM01460, prove that there’s positive change at the brand. The brand’s newest watch, the Luminor Marina PAM01759, restores a sense of functional clarity to the Luminor line, taking cues from the brand’s formative instrument era while relying on the fully in-house P.9010 calibre, an essential distinction from earlier models that leaned on Richemont-sourced movements.
The 44mm stainless steel case follows the familiar Luminor blueprint, but the domed sapphire crystal sets the tone. Beyond its vintage resonance, it subtly enhances legibility by drawing light into the dial and softening the profile, echoing the old plexiglass-equipped Panerai divers built for military use. The closed steel back, engraved with the individual edition number, keeps the watch visually honest, while the 300m water-resistance rating (tested beyond spec) asserts that this remains a genuine tool watch, not a thematic exercise.
The sandwich dial is classic Panerai: matte black, full Arabic numerals in green Super-LumiNova. It’s a layout lifted from some of the brand’s most recognisable designs, and the small seconds at 9 o’clock preserve the practical diver’s requirement of having a constant running indicator. Omitting the date restores the clean geometry that fans often miss in modern Luminor Marinas.
Power comes from the P.9010, a slim automatic calibre with twin barrels for a three-day reserve and an hour hand that can be adjusted independently, useful for travel and a notable upgrade in everyday usability. The movement winds bidirectionally and runs at 28,800 vibrations/hour, providing a modern technical base beneath the historically guided design.
The watch is worn on a dark brown vintage-style calf strap closed with a steel pin buckle, with an additional black rubber strap supplied for more demanding use. Limited to 1,000 pieces, the PAM01759 appears as a straightforward, well-executed Luminor: quietly refined, technically sound, and faithful to the instrument DNA that made the model a modern classic. Price is EUR 9,900 or USD 10,200. For more, visit panerai.com.
