The smaller speedy shines brighter!

Omega speedmaster 38mm

The Speedmaster 38mm made its debut in 2017. Among the most popular iterations of this smaller Speedmaster is the Cappuccino in 18K Sedna™ Gold, with horizontal brown oval subdials and vertical oval date window at 6 o’clock. This year, Omega expands the collection with 8 new sparkling versions set with diamonds and a choice of 2 dial colours. The luxurious setting of these new iterations includes a paved bezel (~1.5 carats), diamond-ringed subdials and a diamond-set crown.

Eight new iterations of the Omega Speedmaster 38mm introduce a more luxurious and more glamourous twist to the model, slightly moving away from its sporty character by omitting the tachymeter bezel in favor of much larger stones. Among these, two versions come in 18K Sedna Gold featuring a chocolate brown PVD dial with horizontal silvery subdials, while another two are crafted in 18K Moonshine Gold, boasting a green PVD dial with similar subdials. Additionally, four new steel versions are available, each offering the choice of either dial color. Regardless of the material, buyers have the option to pair their timepiece with either alligator leather straps or metal bracelets.

Besides the changes linked to the new diamond setting, the case retains its specifications, meaning in particular a 38mm diameter and a 14.7mm thickness. The screw-in case back of all new models is stamped with a seahorse medallion.

As a collection extension, these are still powered by the COSC-certified Co-Axial Calibre 3330. This automatic column-wheel chronograph features a traditional 3-6-9 lay-out and a date indication at 6 o’clock (here through a vertical oval window). It runs at with a 52-hour power reserve. Its free-sprung balance wheel features a Si14 silicon spring.

These new, additional diamond-set versions of the Omega Speedmaster retail from CHF 16,500 in steel and from CHF 32,200 in gold.

  1. Cannot help but be underwhelmed by this “extension” to the Speedmaster 38. Rather like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. It is high time Omega either discontinued the Speedmaster 38 or replaced it with a new model. I suspect the stumbling block is that there is currently no METAS capable chronograph movement available, such as one based on the Cal.88xx family of movements. A “Cal.9800” single barrel chronograph movement with a thickness under 8mm would be ideal for a smaller Speedmaster or a De Ville chronograph as well.
