The MONOCHROME Montre de Souscription 5 x Angelus Chronographe Tachymètre
A special tachymeter 2N gold dial and a movement with superb pedigree for our fifth MdS.
After the successful sale of our fourth Montre de Souscription, we are launching our fifth MdS edition. This time, the collaboration is with Angelus, with a timepiece based on a monopoussoir chronograph with a superb movement. The new Montre de Souscription 5 ticks all the boxes of what we love most at MONOCHROME: vintage inspiration, elegant proportions, classic timeless design, haute horlogerie finishes, a superlative movement, a pertinent complication, an exclusive dial and, last but not least, a calibre with unbeatable pedigree. Meet the MONOCHROME Montre de Souscription 5 Angelus Chronographe Tachymètre. This thin, compact, hand-wound chronograph with monopusher architecture is released as a limited run of no more than 20 pieces under our signature subscription campaign.
A movement with pedigree
Inside the Montre de Souscription 5 is the Angelus calibre A5000, an exceptional movement with a notable track record. The story of this thin, hand-wound monopusher can be traced back to 1989, when François-Paul Journe formed a joint company with Denis Flageollet (De Bethune) and Vianney Halter. Known as THA or Techniques Horlogères Appliquées, the company was responsible for the conception of several movements, including a very particular hand-wound monopusher chronograph, the calibre 045MC, housed inside a now-cult watch, the 1999 Cartier Tortue Monopoussoir, part of the Collection Privé Cartier Paris (CPCP). Their work was based on a Peseux movement, modified to position the small seconds at 9 o’clock rather than 6 o’clock. Using this reliable, thin (2.5mm) base, capable of generating enough torque to power complications, Journe and Flageollet worked on integrating a chronograph on the reverse side, using only an additional 1.7mm of space for the complication.

François-Paul Journe left Techniques Horlogères Appliquées in 1995 and transferred the rights to produce this movement to Jaquet SA. In the early 2000s, Jaquet SA changed ownership and became La Joux-Perret, and this is how the movement, conceived almost three decades ago, found its way into the cases of modern Angelus watches, after undergoing multiple modifications to meet contemporary standards.
Now known as the calibre A5000, the movement retains most of the features of the classic architecture described above, with a compact timekeeping base running at 3Hz, 23 jewels and a 42h power reserve. Looking at the movement through the caseback, you’re greeted with a traditional layout. In an era of automatic chronograph movements with a vertical clutch that leaves no space for imagination, it is simply delightful to observe this calibre. All gears, levers, springs and the column wheel are clearly visible. The finishing is also appealing, with bevelled bridges, Geneva stripes, chamfered levers with straight-grained surfaces, circular-grained golden wheels and polished screws: traditional, not overly ostentatious, elegant. For our MONOCHROME Montre de Souscription 5, we chose a version of the A5000 with a 3N gold-finished mainplate and bridges, contrasting with the stainless steel chronograph mechanism.
A tachymeter dial in 2N gold
Let’s now discuss the looks of this new MdS 5, which shares its base architecture with the Angelus Chronographe Télémètre, yet with several twists to make it ours. As its name suggests, Angelus’ version (available in three limited editions: two in steel and one in gold) features a telemeter scale. Our watch, the MONOCHROME x Angelus Chronographe Tachymètre, differs in this aspect, as it connects this watch to our passions for cars and motorsport in particular.
A tachymeter is designed to measure average speeds. This feature is mostly used on racing and pilot chronographs. For example, if you drive exactly 1 kilometre or 1 mile, the tachymeter will let you calculate your average speed (in km/h or mph). And because we, at MONOCHROME, share a passion for watches and cars, we believed the tachymeter scale would be more appropriate. Together with Angelus, we have created a snailed scale, a tribute to vintage watches. The scale is graduated from 500 to 30 units, with a double coil at the periphery of the dial. A rare feature, as snailed scales are often found in the centre of the dial.
The addition of a tachymeter scale isn’t the only unique feature of the Montre de Souscription 5. Although we initially considered a salmon dial as a nod to our first Montre de Souscription, a closer examination of vintage Angelus chronograph watches inspired us to create a gold-toned dial. The matte, lightly grained dial is coated in a pale 2N gold tone and paired with black printings, polished applied markers and luminous hands.
Compact Proportions
Our Angelus Chronographe comes in a 37mm stainless steel case that is only 9.25mm thick. The case, designed by Angelus as a nod to its vintage 1950s chronographs, has relatively long, slender lugs, which make the watch wear slightly larger than its 37mm diameter might suggest. Nonetheless, it remains a relatively small wristwatch. It is refined, elegant and slim, with a beautifully finished case that combines brushed surfaces on the flanks and top with a contrasting polished bevel on the side.
The right side is where everything happens, since the Montre de Souscription 5 Tachymètre is a monopusher chronograph. The pusher to start, stop and reset the stopwatch is integrated into the crown, resulting in a watch that’s balanced, restrained and elegant. Consistent with the retro inspiration of the watch, the dial is protected by a box-shaped sapphire crystal and the back, engraved with the watch’s name and its individual number, also features its own sapphire crystal to reveal the movement.
Complementing the MONOCHROME Montre de Souscription 5 Angelus Chronographe Tachymètre is a grey nubuck strap, secured with a signed stainless steel pin buckle. The watch will be delivered in a presentation box with an additional leather travel pouch inside.

It looks very neat. For the price I’d expect every piece to be made by hand by a virgin on a full moon night, tho.
Multi-scale chronograph in white lacquer and red snail in the center, blue and black outer scale when?
Really, absolutely, definitively superb!
