TV-shaped watches were all the rage in the 1970s. Channelling the vibe, Mido presented its first TV-shaped watch in 1973. Reviving the cult shape to coincide with the Multifort’s 50th anniversary, Mido released the Multifort TV Big Date in 2023. Positioned as an accessible take on the luxury sports watch, the TV Big Date tunes into a monochromatic channel courtesy of its titanium case and bracelet, complemented by a silvery grey dial.

Earlier editions of the TV Big Date have appeared in steel, black PVD and even a swank rose gold PVD case, making this the first titanium model to join the lineup. The titanium edition is housed in the brand’s larger 39.2 x 40mm case with a thickness of 11.5mm. Lightweight yet resilient, the rounded rectangular titanium case features the hallmark traits of the family with a wide, vertically brushed bezel, a recessed sandblasted pip in the bezel at noon, slightly protruding lips at either end of the case, and a screw-down crown with guards to ensure the 100m depth rating.

Dominating the dial is Mido’s Big Date display at noon, a date window that can be consulted without a magnifying glass. With numerals almost three times larger than watches of a similar size, the two separate discs are black with white numerals for enhanced legibility.

Other signature traits include the horizontal grooves in relief traversing the grey dial. In tune with the latest trends in watchmaking, the grey dial has a gradient effect that transitions from a lighter grey centre to more saturated tones, matching the darker grey colour of the sloping flange. Recessed and treated with white Super-LumiNova, the circular and trapezoid indices (at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock). The baton hour and minute hands are also filled with a strip of white SLN.

The bracelet, with satin-brushed outer links and a polished central link, has a folding clasp and can be switched in seconds thanks to the quick-release push pins. Equipped with Swatch Group’s modern Powermatic 80 (calibre 80), the automatic movement has a shock-resistant and anti-magnetic Nivachron balance spring, a resilient 80-hour power reserve and a customised Mido rotor with Geneva stripes.

The Mido Multifort TV Big Date Titanium is part of the permanent collection, now available and retails for CHF 1,290. More information at midowatches.com.

  1. I’ve watched a LOT of TV in my time and I’ve never seen a square one.

  2. Oh my. I think I just found my next one too many drinks on a late night purchase.
