The New Black & Orange Mido Multifort TV Big Date
Black and orange make surprisingly attractive screen partners in Mido’s latest prime TV hit.
Taking its design cues from a 1973 forebear with a rounded square TV-shaped case, Mido’s Multifort TV Big Date was rereleased on its fiftieth birthday in 2023. A timely move, the accessibly priced Multifort TV Big Date ticks all the boxes of a luxury sports watch and provides an alternative to the over-priced and impossible-to-get models that have dominated the sector since the 1970s. Mido returns with another winning version of its Multifort TV Big Date in a sleek black PVD case with orange accents on the dial.
Like TVs from the 1970s, the square-shaped case with rounded corners plays the luxury sports watch card to perfection. With a 40mm diameter, a length of 39.2mm and a thickness of 11.5mm, it is a large watch, no doubt about it. However, the black PVD coating attenuates its size noticeably, giving it a sleeker, more compact look. Still decorated with the same finishes as other references, the brushed case middle and lugs meet a wide polished bevelled area beneath the vertically brushed bezel. The recessed and sandblasted pip on the bezel at noon and the slightly protruding lips at either end of the case are classic features of the collection, as are the crown guards protecting the 7mm screw-down crown for the 100m water-resistance rating.
Orange and black are signature Mido colours. Decorated with horizontal, brushed grooves, the black dial of the Multifort TV Big Date has a subtle gradient intensifying as it reaches the perimeter. The bold black background really makes the orange accents pop. The recessed round indices and rectangular markers at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock are filled with orange Super-LumiNova, matching that on the baton hour and minute hands.
The star feature is the big date aperture at noon with two windows and separate discs at different levels that rotate in different directions. Other orange accents can be found on the minutes flange and the inscriptions on the dial. An anti-reflective sapphire glass protects the dial.
Fitted with a black PVD-coated steel bracelet with satin-finished outer links and a polished central link, the bracelet can be switched instantly thanks to the quick-release push pins. Equipped with Swatch Group’s modern Powermatic 80 (calibre 80), the automatic movement has a shock-resistant and anti-magnetic Nivachron balance spring, a resilient 80-hour power reserve and a customised Mido rotor with Geneva stripes.
The Mido Multifort TV Big Date retails for EUR 1,350. More information at midowatches.com.
