One of Swatch Group’s mid-level brands, Mido is beginning to get the attention it deserves with well-designed, robust watches that won’t break the bank. The recent revival of Mido’s 1970s TV-shaped watch, rechristened the Multifort TV Big Date, is a testament to the brand’s knack for transforming vintage designs into coveted models with contemporary specs. However, not all Mido’s models hail from the brand’s archives. The latest model, the Multifort Chronometer1 Racer, joins the Multifort sub-collection. Dressed in racy blue and orange, the new daily beater, featuring day and date functions, extols its status as a Swiss COSC-certified chronometer.

To understand the origins of the new Multifort Chronometer, we must go back to 1934, when Mido introduced the Multifort line, fitted with an antimagnetic, automatic movement that included built-in water and shock resistance. Neither is Mido a newcomer to chronometry, having produced its first chronometer-certified watch in the mid-1950s.

No stranger to bold colour combinations, witnessed on the Ocean Star Decompression Timer, the new Multifort Chronometer1 Racer stands out with its bright orange and blue livery. Housed in a 42mm black PVD-coated stainless steel case with a thickness of 12mm, the large screw-down crown ensures the 100m water-resistance.

One of the unifying features of the Multifort Chronometer1 sub-collection is the Côtes de Genève stripes applied to the dial. By far the liveliest representative of this family, the Geneva stripes are featured in the centre of the dial, adding texture and volume, but surrounded by a slim orange ring and a wider light blue ring. Like a bull’s eye, the blue ring is encircled by a white track and a black circular-brushed minutes/seconds track with orange numerals is found on the periphery.

A prominent and legible silver-framed day and date window with a black background and white inscriptions is positioned at 3 o’clock. The applied indices, also silver-coloured, have an inlay of Super-LumiNova that matches the hour and minute hands. Adding another dash of colour, the long central seconds hand is lacquered in orange.

Shared by other mid-range Swatch Group brands, the calibre 80 used by Mido is a top-grade version fitted with a silicon balance spring for enhanced accuracy and magnetic resistance. Known at Mido as the calibre 80 SI, the movement delivers an impressive 80-hour power reserve and is certified by the COSC as a chronometer. Visible through the transparent caseback, the movement features blued screws, and the rotor has Côtes de Genève stripes.

The Multifort Chronometer1 Racer comes with two interchangeable leather straps: a light blue strap with orange speed lines and a black, rally-style, aerated leather strap with orange and blue stitching. This colourful chronometer-certified model retails for a reasonable CHF 1,320. (incl. tax). More information at midowatches.com.
