The Roaring Tiger Version of the Zenith Defy Extreme Jungle
Tiger eye stripes and jungle vegetation for the last in the Defy Extreme trilogy inspired by extreme environments.
Following the trail set by the Desert and Glacier editions, Zenith sends its Defy Extreme into the jungle to complete its trilogy of hostile environment-inspired models. The boldest, most robust and technical-looking model in the brand’s collection roars loudly with tiger stripes and lush green jungle accents.
Zenith’s Defy Extreme collection, released in 2021, is the high-testosterone brother of the Defy family with two regulating organs beating at different speeds; the regulator for the timekeeping beats at 5Hz while the regulator for the chronograph whizzes at 50Hz to capture 1/100th-of-a-second chronograph readings.
As the third member of the extreme environment series, the Defy Extreme Jungle also features natural stones. The Desert edition, for example, incorporated Falcon’s Eye stone on the pushers and 12-sided bezel, while the Glacier reference captured the icy blue colour of frozen landscapes with Chalcedony.
Presented in a 200m water-resistant, 45mm titanium case with a height of 15.4mm, the jutting angles of the case are brushed with wide polished bevels on the case flanks and bezel. The Defy Extreme Jungle pumps up the colour to daring volumes. To evoke the stripy fur of tigers, the pusher protectors and the dodecagonal bezel are made from Tiger’s Eye stone. Renowned for its chatoyancy, or cat’s eye effect, Tiger’s Eye is a variant of quartz with golden and rusty-brown striations. The effect is dramatic and ensures that each watch will be unique.
The openworked, multi-layered dial features a jungle green-tinted sapphire crystal for the three sub-dials and the power reserve indicator at noon. Even the mainplate and rotor are finished with a khaki green colour to keep the jungle theme consistent. Taking the stripy tiger theme to the dial, the three sub-dials feature orange and black striped frames with white markings. Like all models equipped with the El Primero 9004 calibre, the central chronograph hand whizzes around the dial in one second, allowing for precision timings that can be measured on the 1/100th-of-a-seconds track on the peripheral flange.
The rhodium-plated indices and hour and minute hands have beige Super-LumiNova. Introduced in 2017, the El Primero 9004 notched up the speed of the 1969 El Primero movement from 5Hz to 50Hz and raised precision tenfold. To ensure there is sufficient petrol in the tank to power both escapements, there is a double barrel with 50h capacity when the chronograph is not engaged.
Like other Zenith Defy Extreme models, the watch comes with a practical strap exchange system. It is delivered with a titanium bracelet, a green embossed rubber strap with a titanium folding buckle and a black Velcro strap. The Zenith Defy Extreme Jungle is a limited edition of 50 pieces and retails for CHF 25,900 / EUR 28,000. More information at Zenith-Watches.com.
