The Hamilton Khaki Field & Pilot Pioneer Limited Edition For Hodinkee

Hodinkee introduces a pair of limited edition Hamilton watches that can be bought either as a set, or separately.

Whenever media outlets and watchmaking companies intertwine, things can take a very interesting turn. Our esteemed colleagues of Hodinkee are no strangers to collaborations, as are we of course, but this next one is quite cool, to be honest. Not only did they select two of the finest watches currently made by Hamilton, but they also came up with a cool, slightly more contemporary design and the option to buy each watch individually, or as a complete set! This is the Hamilton Khaki Collector’s Set for Hodinkee, which can be broken into the Hamilton Khaki Pioneer and the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical (and even a bit more).

Hamilton Khaki Pioneer Limited Edition for Hodinkee

Based on the popular and well-equipped Hamilton Khaki Pilot Pioneer, this limited edition for Hodinkee mixes things up with a new colour scheme. It is based on the manual wound Khaki Pioneer pilot’s chronograph, which is in turn inspired by RAF-issued chronographs from the 1970s. The stainless steel case measures 40mm in width and 14.35mm in height, finished with a sapphire crystal. The shape is slightly asymmetrical, with the right-hand side having a wider profile to protect the partly tucked-in crown and pushers. The caseback shows that this is a special edition for Hodinkee and the individual number of the watch.

Power comes from Hamilton’s manually wound Calibre H-51-Si which we know from the regular Khaki Pioneer and Intra-Matic. This cam-operated movement comes with 27 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph and a total running time of 60 hours when fully wound. It also has a silicon balance spring to improve its anti-magnetic resistance. The functions include hours, minutes, small seconds and a chronograph with central seconds and a 30-minute counter. It’s worn on a tan canvas strap with a leather reinforcement patch and closes with a steel pin buckle.

Hamilton Khaki Field Limited Edition for Hodinkee

When it comes to value for money, the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical has always been a strong performer. It comes with a cool retro vibe and very impressive specifications all around. The case is a very pleasant 38mm in diameter and only 9.5mm in height, thanks to (in part) the hand-wound mechanical movement. The dial follows the same design as the Khaki Pioneer listed above, so a sandblasted matte black base dial with white markings, beige indices and beige and orange hands. With the absence of any further details or indications, the adaptation of the Khaki Field is a wonderfully legible piece.

Underneath the solid caseback ticks the Hamilton H-50 calibre, which is based on the ETA 2801 coming from within the Swatch Group. This is hand-wound as said, and uses 17 jewels to run at a rate of 21,600vph. One of the biggest selling points of this humble movement is its very generous power reserve of 80 hours. The functions are limited to hours, minutes and seconds only, but that’s basically what you want in a field watch. This too comes on a tan canvas strap with a reinforcement patch made of leather and a steel pin buckle.
