Dr Ludwig Oechslin is a genius in the art of simplifying complications and is renowned for the radical minimalism he has injected into the design language of his brand Ochs und Junior. The latest release is not a novelty but a reworked take on the Due Ore, the brand’s desperately easy-to-set and consult travel watch. Highlighting the industrial design aspect of Ochs und Junior, the Due Ore has a raw, silver finishing straight off the CNC machine. Offered in 39mm and 42mm titanium cases, the Ochs Und Junior Due Ore Raw with Oj Blue accents displays the time in two separate time zones at a glance.

Radical simplicity

With complications ranging from perpetual (Cent’Anni) and annual calendars (Anno) to more straightforward days of the week (Settimana) and month (Mese) models, all Ochs und Junior models share straightforward two-piece round cases designed by Ludwig Oechslin with markings from milling and machining. Following on the heels of the 2022 Due Ore with a matte Oj Blue dial and zesty contrasting indications, the latest Due Ore models embrace a more industrial, more ‘raw’ look like the Settimana Raw.

Like all Oechslin’s watches, the display is deceptively simple. The current time zone (home time) is indicated by the signature Oj Blue central hour, minute and seconds hands pointing to the dark blue baton hour markers; the second time zone is displayed inside the 12 cut-out rectangles of the adjustable time zone disc with Arabic numerals. All the numerals, markers and hands are treated with Super-LumiNova.

In the pursuit of mechanical simplicity, Oechslin replaced the 31-tooth date disc of an ETA 2824-2 base movement with a 48-tooth adjustable time zone disc. This simple yet effective solution allows you to adjust the second time zone disc bearing the Arabic numerals via the crown (position 1) to reflect the difference in hours. If the second time zone is +6 hours ahead of your home time, rotate the disc until the number 6 appears in the aperture at 12 o’clock. You can consult both times simultaneously with the central hour and minute hands. It’s that simple. However, since the second time zone is based on a 12-hour indication, you’ll have to work out whether it is night or day before making that important phone call.

The Ochs Und Junior Due Ore is offered in 39mm and 42mm grade 5 titanium cases with the hallmark industrial finishings associated with the brand. Being titanium, the cases are exceptionally light; the 39mm weighs 54g, and the 42mm weighs 62g, including the leather strap and buckle.

Both sizes come with a black Ecopell vegetable-tanned leather strap handmade by Sabina Brägger with a titanium pin buckle.
