The New HYT Hastroid Silver Red
The Hastroid saga continues with red fluidic hours suspended inside a lightweight titanium vessel.
Since 2012, HYT has occupied a unique niche in the market as the only watch brand to display time with fluids. There have been clepsydras since time immemorial, but HYT’s neon fluids, pumped around the dial by bellows to indicate the hours, are unique in the watch world. The Hastroid, launched in 2022, marked a second lease of life for the company and returned to the brand’s roots with its avant-garde sci-fi design. A new limited edition of the Hastroid vessel lands at HYT, indicating time with bright red liquid on board a titanium vessel.
Borrowing design features of HYT’s Moon Runner, the large sandwich-style case of the Hastroid has openworked lugs, indentations on the flanks with aerated grids and a crown flanked by guards between 2 and 3 o’clock. In keeping with the brand’s avant-garde aesthetics, the case is crafted in a contemporary combination of titanium and black DLC titanium. The central black DLC titanium container protecting the movement features sandblasted surfaces, while the openworked titanium frame displays vertically brushed finishings.
The choice of lightweight yet resilient titanium is almost a must given the large dimensions of the Hastroid Silver Red, which has a 48mm diameter, a thickness of 17.2mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of 52.3mm. A nice touch is how the silver-coloured aerated grilles on the case flanks reveal a red interior matching the colour of the fluid in the capillary and the top stitching on the strap.
Like all HYT’s watches, the originality lies in the time display that depends on two immiscible fluids placed inside a glass capillary. Propelled by bellows, the left bellow pushes the coloured fluid along the tube, and the right bellow pushes the transparent fluid; the convergence of the two fluids marks the current hour. Once the coloured liquid reaches 6 o’clock, it flows back in a retrograde motion. To enhance legibility, the red fluid is luminescent and the capillary containing the transparent fluid is treated with white Super-LumiNova.
The chapter ring with the hour markers is also aerated like the lateral grilles and hosts Arabic numerals made from blocks of Super-LumiNova. A large skeletonised matte black hand with red and white Super-LumiNova indicates the black and white minutes track. First seen on the Hastroid Blue Star, the redesigned power reserve indicator and small seconds counter also appear here. Designed to be more legible, the openworked power reserve is positioned on the right and the small seconds opposite, both with red-tipped SLN hands and luminous white markings.
As with the previous Hastroid models, this Silver Red version comes with the proprietary calibre HYT 501-CM, developed with Eric Coudray. This modular movement is wound by hand, has a frequency of 28,000vph and can store a maximum of 72 hours of power. The entire movement uses 352 parts, most decorated with bead-blasted and satin-brushed surfaces to match the case.
