The New Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon 38 Mintnight (Live Pics & Price)

A more compact and unabashedly feminine new Moon rises at Arnold & Son.

Arnold & Son’s obsession with the Moon has manifested itself with not one but two separate collections dedicated to our neighbouring satellite. The brand’s latest ode to the Moon is the Perpetual Moon 38 Mintnight, a more compact version of the Perpetual Moon 41.5 collection designed for women with a stylised, poetic interpretation of the phases of the Moon. Interpreted in precious materials, the  Perpetual Moon 38 Mintnight is equipped with a smaller calibre specifically designed for this model.

Moonstruck

The Moon has exerted its gravitational pull on Arnold & Son, resulting in models like the Perpetual Moon and Double Hemisphere Perpetual Moon equipped with generous apertures for the display and realistically engraved lunar surfaces. However, the unveiling of the Luna Magna in 2021 cast the Moon in a whole new 3D light.

The white gold case of the new, more compact Perpetual Moon Mintnight has a diameter of 38mm and a height of 10.44mm. The bezel, lugs and crown are set with 80 brilliant-cut diamonds, adding a good dose of sparkle to the composition.

In a departure from some of the more realistic interpretations of the Moon appearing with hand-painted details to recreate its uneven surface, the Perpetual Moon Mintnight offers a view of the Moon from Earth as it rises above the beautiful landscape (or seascape) depicted on the dial.

In the lower half of the dial is a pitted textured pattern made of shimmering ruthenium crystals echoing the material used to depict the Moon. A series of undulating hills or waves rise above the silvery foreground, picked out in graduated mint green (hence the name, Mintnight), turquoise, teal and sky blue mother-of-pearl. The natural opalescence of mother-of-pearl plays with the light and gives the composition a dreamy, celestial spirit. Hand-painted stars in the night sky, representing the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia constellations, accompany the Moon in its phases. Five marquise-cut diamonds represent the hours from 10 to 2 o’clock.

The more compact case size required the development of a new calibre, the manual-winding A&S1612. Measuring 29.4mm across and with a height of 4.95mm, the movement has a frequency of 21,600vph and a generous 90h power reserve. If kept wound, the astronomical moon phase complication will remain accurate for 122 years. Viewed from the reverse, the movement is beautifully decorated with radiating Côtes de Genève, circular satin-finished wheels, blued and chamfered screws and polished and bevelled bridges.

The Perpetual Moon 38 Mintnight comes on a matching teal-blue alligator leather strap with a raspberry-pink lining and is attached to the wrist with an 18k white gold pin buckle set with 22 brilliant-cut diamonds.
