Tudor's more compact BB58 finally earns its wings, propelled by its neo-vintage appeal and a chronometer-certified movement.
The model Tudor fans have been clamouring for finally materialises with the release of the Black Bay 58 GMT. Although the Black Bay collection is no stranger to dual time zone models – the first Tudor Black Bay GMT was introduced in 2018 – this is the first time the more compact 39mm Black Bay 58 earns its wings. Decked with an appealing neo-vintage flair, the two-toned burgundy and black bezel and gilt touches evoke the golden age of air travel in the 1950s when travelling across time zones was the ultimate sign of a glamorous lifestyle.
Following the launch of the popular 41mm Black Bay series in 2012, Tudor introduced the Black Bay 58 in 2018. Appealing to a wider audience with its more compact 39mm diameter, the Black Bay 58 was closer in size to its forefather, the 37mm Tudor Submariner 7924 of 1958, the brand’s first 200m water-resistant diver’s watch, also known as the ‘Big Crown’.
The 39mm stainless steel case of the Black Bay 58 GMT is still characterised by the lack of crown guards flanking the screw-down crown. The crown has been redesigned to sit flush in the middle of the case, protecting and hiding the tube, a design feature that evokes Tudor’s first dive watches. At 12.8mm it is slimmer than the 15mm profile of the 41mm Black Bay GMT. Finished with brushed and polished surfaces and bevelled lugs, the case can be fitted with a three-link rivet-style steel bracelet or a black rubber strap, both equipped with Tudor’s T-fit clasp to adjust the length without tools.
Fitted with a 24-hour bidirectional rotating bezel in black and burgundy with gilt accents and a knurled edge, the two-tone areas are made of anodised aluminium. The slightly domed matte black dial has a soft radial brush and plays with golden accents, a nod to the golden age of air travel in the 1950s. A Black Bay is not a Black Bay without the signature snowflake hands, first introduced on Tudor’s diver watches in 1969 and used here for the hours and GMT function. The applied indices – circular, rectangular and an inverted triangle at noon – have gilt frames and are filled with Super-LumiNova like the four central hands, including the lollipop seconds hand. The instantaneous date window, an important function on GMT models, is positioned at 3 o’clock and is synchronised with the jumping hour hand.
Inside the case is the Kenissi manufacture calibre MT5450-U with COSC chronometer certification and Master Chronometer Certification from METAS. Regulated to between -2 and +4 seconds per day, it surpasses COSC standards. Robust and efficient, the automatic movement with an integrated GMT function has a non-magnetic silicon balance spring, beats at a frequency of 4Hz and delivers a 65-hour power reserve. Given its precision, the stop-seconds function facilitates precision time settings. As a bona fide traveller’s GMT watch, the hour hand corresponding to local time can be adjusted in one-hour increments.
