Back to Basics with the Ming 37.02 Minimalist

A puristic take on Ming's curvaceous 37-series watch.

Hailing from the world of photography, Malaysian entrepreneur Ming Thein has always had a passion for watches. It’s, in fact, how he made a name for himself before setting out to create his own watch brand. Over the years following the inaugural MING 17.01 in 2017, we’ve witnessed his keen eye for craftsmanship, originality and creativity manifest itself in the full-fledged eponymous brand it is today. What stands out are the often curvaceous cases and dials that interact with light like no other. The brand’s latest creation retains all that yet presents it in a very pure package. This is the aptly named MING 37.02 Minimalist.

From the outset, the MING has reduced the 37.02 Minimalist to the bare minimum yet manages to retain its much-loved DNA. The compact case of the 37-series is still there, coming in at 38mm in diameter and 11mm in height and a very pleasant 44.5mm lug-to-lug. The signature curved lugs and an oversized notched crown give it a ton of character, and both sides are fitted with a double-domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating.

With most MINGs, it’s all about the interplay of light and shadow, and the MING 37.02 Minimalist delivers as expected despite its cleanliness. The sapphire crystal dial has a special inset of liquid-filled Polar White luminous indices. The two hands are finished with blue-emitting Super-LumiNova X1 inserts and indicate the hours and minutes only. The only form of branding is the subtle mention of “MING” at 6′, keeping the minimalist theme going.

Inside, we find a custom version of the Sellita SW300-1 automatic. This runs at a frequency of 28,800vph and has a running time of approximately 45 hours. All the bridges and plates have been finished with an anthracite coating, just as we’ve seen with the MING 37.02 Bluefin Dive Watch, for instance. The bespoke openworked rotor has a subtle brushed finish on the weighted outer edge and is signed with the brand’s name.

The MING 37.02 Minimalist comes on a custom MING FKM rubber strap in black with a special tuck buckle that inserts the tip of the long end underneath the buckle end for a clean look. The price is set at CHF 3,250, excluding VAT, and it’s exclusively available through Ming. Watch from 1PM GMT on October 23rd 2024. The watches are in stock and ready to ship upon ordering.
