The Fratello x Straum Jan Mayen Limited Edition

A firey red dial inspired by a volcano enlivens this collaborative effort.

Our friends and colleagues of Fratello Watches are back at it again with a new collaboration coming up for sale very soon. This time, the Fratello team has joined forces with Norwegian microbrand Straum to produce a new fiery-red model. Straum was founded by Lasse Roxrud Farstad and Øystein Hell Husby and launched the nature-inspired Opphav collection amidst the global Covid-19 pandemic, which quickly sold out. The Jan Mayen is the follow-up model to the Opphav and offers a subtle new take on the original concept. The new design is launched with this Fratello x Straum Jan Mayen Limited Edition, which will only be available for a very limited time.

The Jan Mayen is an entirely new collection for Straum and can be seen as a refinement of the successful Opphav collection. It is a compact 39mm wide stainless steel watch with a sporty touch. It is relatively slim, with a height of 11.3mm, including the crystal. The finishing is a mix of straight and circular brushing and polished details. The crown is embraced by guards protruding from the caseband, and you will find sapphire crystals on both sides. The water-resistance is rated at 100m.

The name comes from the volcanic Jan Mayen Island, far off the coast of Norway, and the result is pretty dramatic. To be honest, the dial of this collaborative limited edition looks rather impressive with its lava-red fumé effect. The ridged pattern is inspired by the insides of an active volcano. The applied markers are polished, with luminous inserts, as are the central hour, minute and seconds hands. White minute markers between the hour indices and a simple Straum logo finish it all off.

The Jan Mayen L.E. is powered by the La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement, which uses 24 jewels and runs at a frequency of 28,800vph. The movement indicates the hours, minutes and (hacking) seconds). It offers a rather generous 70-hour power reserve, and the movement can be seen through the sapphire crystal caseback that’s decorated with a Fratello engraving.

The Fratello x Jan Mayen Limited Edition has an integrated stainless steel bracelet with a butterfly folding clasp. It is not limited in number but rather in time, as Fratello has opted for a pre-order window that starts on April 13th at 4:00 PM CEST and ends on April 20th at 4:00 PM CEST. Delivery for the orders made during that week is said to commence six months after the window closes (around October). The price is set at EUR 1,600 without taxes during the pre-order period. Once the window closes, this configuration is never to be produced again.

  2. Novelty watch,a more than bit Seikoesq. Not my cup of tea, and to much $ for a gimmick watch I believe it has the look of a decent $500 Seiko.
