The Code 11.59 By Audemars Piguet Flying Tourbillon With Smoked Green Aventurine Dial

Part of the 2023 collection, Audemars Piguet unveils a mesmerising version of its Code 11.59 Flying Tourbillon with a smoked green enamelled aventurine dial. Also referred to as fumé or gradient dials, the effect produces a lighter tone in the centre of the dial that intensifies as it reaches the periphery. Presented in a two-tone 41mm pink gold and black ceramic case, this iteration will be launched exclusively in South-East Asia in June 2023, followed by other countries in August.

The Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon was one of the first models introduced in the 2019 launch of the Code 11.59 collection and was fitted with a new movement – calibre 2950 – with a flying tourbillon. Following in the footsteps of the 2020 editions, one with a shimmering black aventurine dial and a second one with a blue gradient aventurine dial, Audemars Piguet has gone to town with this Code 11.59 iteration.

Two-tone case

The shimmering green aventurine dial incorporates a gradient effect, and the 41mm case is two-tone and made of pink gold with a black ceramic case middle. Like other Code 11.59 family members, the multifaceted case architecture, with its highly stylised lugs, slim bezel and octagonal case middle, is highlighted with satin-brushed and polished surfaces. The incorporation of sleek black ceramic adds a contemporary look and feel to the watch. Compounding the modern mood of this model, the strap is black textured rubber with a calfskin lining and a pink gold AP folding clasp.

Gradient green aventurine

The smoked green enamelled aventurine dial begins life as a blank gold surface treated to a mix of crushed green aventurine glass and enamel. A thin layer of glass sand is mixed with water and applied by hand to the crushed aventurine glass before being heated to over 800ºC in a special kiln. The process, which is repeated over and over again at different temperatures and times, produces the remarkable transparency, depth and light you can appreciate on the dial. To produce the gradient effect, black and green aventurine glass is mixed with the enamel.

Enhanced with a gradient or smoked effect, the shimmering green dial becomes almost black as it reaches the round, raised and black lacquered inner bezel on the periphery. In contrast, the applied numerals, hours markers, hands and AP logo are made of pink gold. Naturally, the large well housing the flying tourbillon with its pink gold-toned balance wheel steals the show at 6 o’clock. A double-curved sapphire crystal protects the dial.

Calibre 2950

Powered by in-house calibre 2950 with a central rotor, the flying tourbillon is cantilevered from the bottom, and there are no bridges to obstruct the view. Beating at 3Hz, the movement delivers up to 65h of power reserve. Visible through the caseback and beneath the openworked golden rotor, high-end finishings complete the show.
