Awake Watches, a young French brand that looks at watchmaking a bit differently from the crowd, has focused its creations since day-1 on sustainability and raising awareness of the limited resources Planet Earth has to offer (hence the name of the brand…) Mostly known for its collaborations with NASA or French special forces, the brand has decided now to offer something a bit more classic. Inspired by nature and the fascinating symmetry that can be found in plant life, Awake has created a new collection named Summetria, with colourful and graphic dials using a guilloche-like pattern.
With all of its projects, Awake aims to raise awareness by reminding us of the beauty of the World. An idea to reconnect with nature… and in the case of the Awake Summetria Collection, it is the observation of nature that has been the inspiration for a dial that we might have not expected from this young brand… Even though by using meteorite recently, Awake has demonstrated its love for patterns and natural elements. Behind the Summetria is the observation of living things and their balanced, harmonious and perfectly symmetrical forms – whether it is the wings of a butterfly or the petals of a flower. And for the dial of Summetria, the inspiration comes from the sunflower heart…
In order to try to reproduce the intricate and highly graphic look of the sunflower heart, the brand decided to use one of the watch industry’s most famous techniques; guilloché. Yet, if done in the traditional way, manually applied engine turning implies costs that wouldn’t fit with Awake’s strategy. But modern techniques have made it possible to create such dials by CNC machine. So is the dial of the Awake Summetria, with a fine concentric texture, available in four colours – black, royal blue, khaki green and copper.
For the rest, these watches remain almost identical to all previous creations of Awake, with a sleek, minimalistic case measuring 40mm in diameter and 11.9mm in height. Made of recycled titanium with matte surfaces, it remains discreet so the focus is on the dial, its colours and textures. The watch is equipped with a sapphire crystal, a see-through caseback and a screw-down crown. Water-resistance is rated at 100m. The dials are completed by sharp faceted hands and markers, with a generous amount of luminscent material.
The movement found in the time-only Awake Summetria is a reliable automatic Miyota 9039, with 4Hz frequency, 42-hour power reserve and hacking function. It is presented with a personalized openworked oscillating weight with polished chamfers, micro-blasted and brushed surfaces. The watches are worn on ethically and responsibly sourced leather straps in grey.
