While Hublot’s Classic Fusion model might look tame in comparison to the brand’s muscular Big Bang quarterbacks, in 1980 it sent shockwaves through the industry. With its unorthodox combination of a gold 37mm porthole-shaped case with exposed screws in the bezel paired with a black rubber strap, Carlo Crocco’s Hublot (French for porthole) watch was such a hit that the name was adopted for the brand. Now known as the Classic Fusion, this cornerstone collection releases a new collaboration with Japanese fashion guru Yohji Yamamoto. The aptly named All Black Camo is a monochromatic black Classic Fusion rippling with textures and contrasts.

Yohji Yamamoto’s fashion brand made its debut in 1981, and his asymmetrical, androgynous black clothes with raw edges made a powerful statement against the colourful, over-the-top glamour of the day. Marking the fourth collaboration with the designer, Hublot applies the “all black” philosophy to its Classic Fusion.

A fusion of different materials and textures, the All Black Camo 42mm case with a thickness of 10.4mm is sheathed in matte microblasted ceramic, a sleek, high-tech material that absorbs light. The hallmark H-shaped screws have also succumbed to the monochromatic palette, now black-plated.

The black and dark grey mottled camouflage pattern on the dial is embossed for relief, with matte black faceted indices and black-plated hands. Even the date window has succumbed to the watch’s dark mood, with a black background and dark grey numerals. Inscribed in the lower half of the dial is Yohji Yamamoto’s signature.

A smoked sapphire caseback reveals glimpses of the MHUB1110 automatic calibre with its openworked rotor. Based on the Sellita SW300-1, this foolproof movement runs at 28,800vph and delivers a power reserve of 48 hours.

As you would expect, the rubber and fabric strap is black, as is the deployant buckle. A limited edition of 300 pieces, the Classic Fusion Yohji Yamamoto All Black Camo retails for CHF 10,500 / EUR 12,000 / USD 12,100 / GBP 9,900. More information at hublot.com.
