The Hermès Arceau Petite Lune Returns in a Blue Lacquered Version
A delightful off-centred moon phase accompanied by two diamond-studded eclipses.
One of France’s oldest family-owned and run luxury companies, Hermès started life in 1837 as a producer of harnesses and saddles in Paris. Renowned for its impeccable artisanal craftsmanship and intrepid artistic flair, Hermès manages to endow its watches with a singular dash of poetry. The equestrian-inspired profile of the Arceau, which has hosted poetic interpretations of time and exquisite métiers d’art models, welcomes a new Arceau Petite Lune model with a dreamy moon phase complication and a diamond-studded eclipse.
The Arceau’s signature asymmetrical stirrup-shaped lugs and ‘galloping’ slanted Arabic numerals were designed by Henri d’Origny, the celebrated artistic director of Hermès, in 1978. For almost fifty years, d’Origny’s timeless design has remained a core product of Hermès. The Arceau Petite Lune, which has been interpreted before with a gorgeous starry night sky and surrounded by celestial bodies, returns in 2025 with its signature moon phase display at 10:30 and an enchanting cosmic twist.
The 38mm stainless steel case features a prominent rose-cut diamond in the crown. The new Petite Lune case’s distinguishing feature is the asymmetric diamond setting spanning the bezel from 8 to 2 o’clock. Thinner at either end and wider in the middle, the 99 brilliant-cut diamonds form a crescent shape to insinuate an eclipse.
The dial inverts the position of the diamond eclipse. A crescent-shaped recess spanning the centre of the dial from 11 to 4 o’clock is set with 15 diamonds that diminish in size as they reach the extremities. The surrounding blue-lacquered gradient scenery produces a chiaroscuro effect and scintillates ever so slightly. Hovering at 10:30, the crescent-shaped moon phase aperture reveals a dark blue star-studded night sky accompanying the waxing and waning of the moon. The elegant leaf-shaped hands are openworked, revealing the abyss-blue central area, insinuating the darkened area produced by an eclipse.
The watch is powered by the automatic movement H1837. Designed in collaboration with Vaucher Manufacture in 2012, this lean 3.7mm automatic has a 42-hour power reserve and beats at a frequency of 4Hz. The movement is decorated with a circular-grained and snailed mainplate with a sprinkling of ‘H’ motifs on the satin-brushed bridges and rotor. The Arceau Petite Lune is paired with an interchangeable Hermès abyss blue alligator strap.
