The Final Editions of the Greubel Forsey Balancier Convexe S² now in White or Black Ceramic
A striking duo to bid farewell to one of Greubel Forsey's inclined-balance movements.
Within Greubel Forsey‘s modern catalogue, the Convexe collection has become one of the brand’s most recognisable showcases of its approach to watchmaking. Revealed in 2019, the Convexe case introduced a double-curved construction, designed to follow the natural shape of the wrist and presenting the movement as a sculptural object. The Balancier Convexe S² first appeared in 2021, with a highly openworked architecture described by the brand as an “urban landscape”, with multiple levels, suspended bridges and dramatic depth revealing the large, inclined balance wheel.
In 2023, the brand offered 41.5mm S² in titanium and carbon, maintaining the concept while evolving the appearance and finishing. Now the story of the S² reaches its final chapter. The brand unveils two final executions of the Balancier Convexe S², one in black ceramic with red gold accents and the other in white ceramic, the most exclusive expressions of the calibre before its production ends permanently in 2026.
The double curvature Convexe case measures 41.5mm across the caseband and retains the profile that has become a hallmark of the collection. The case boasts curved sapphire crystals on both sides, a three-dimensional bezel with variable geometry, and profiled lugs fixed with visible screws. As one can imagine, the watch sits comfortably on the wrist despite its highly technical appearance.
The black ceramic and 5N red gold edition is all about contrast, volume and visual depth. The dark ceramic middle case frames the movement architecture, while the red gold bezel and caseback introduce warmth and a sense of weight. On the white ceramic version, the monochromatic case reveals the movement’s structure through light and shadow, supporting the purity of the Convexe geometry.
As with most Greubel Forsey creations, the dial is essentially the movement, organised around multiple levels and designed to reveal mechanical function rather than conceal it. The hour ring is positioned high beneath the sapphire crystal, while the lower portion of the watch opens up to reveal the large inclined balance. The polished steel hands are filled with Super-LumiNova and positioned atop a suspended arch-shaped bridge, a signature element of the S² design. The large inclined balance wheel in the lower section of the watch is the chronometric centre and the focal point of the design. Additional indications include the small seconds, positioned beside the balance wheel on a gold subdial, and a sector-style power reserve indicator integrated into the movement’s layered architecture.
The watch is powered by the hand-wound Greubel Forsey calibre GF09XV, comprising 301 components, including a 68-part escapement platform for the brand’s signature 30° inclined balance wheel system, designed to improve chronometric stability by reducing positional errors.
Energy is supplied by two fast-rotating coaxial barrels, rotating once every 3.2 hours, delivering a 72-hour chronometric power reserve. One of the barrels incorporates a slipping spring to prevent excessive tension. The in-house variable-inertia balance wheel, measuring 12.6mm in diameter and fitted with six gold mean-time screws, beats at 21,600 vibrations/hour and comes with a balance spring featuring a Phillips terminal curve and Geneva-style stud.
As for the finishing, titanium bridges and mainplates are frosted and hand-finished, with polished bevels and countersinks. The multi-level suspended-arch bridge is straight-grained and polished, while the movement’s reverse side features frosted bridges with polished edges and a gold plate engraved with the limitation number. Areas rarely visible after assembly receive the same level of attention.
Both final editions are delivered on a hand-sewn, textured rubber strap, in black or white, depending on the version, and are closed with a folding clasp in titanium or in titanium and 5N red gold. A three-row titanium bracelet with integrated fine adjustment is also available on request.
