The New Gerald Charles Masterlink Perpetual Calendar
The brand’s integrated sports watch goes complicated…
Gerald Charles is a name that traces back to the legendary Gérald Genta, widely regarded as one of the most influential modern watch designers. While his eponymous brand, Gerald Genta, was sold to Bulgari in 2000, Genta himself soon embarked on a new chapter, founding Gérald Charles as a more personal expression of his design philosophy. In 2011, the brand was revived by the Ziviani family, who built upon one of its distinctive creations: the Maestro. Since then, Gerald Charles has steadily evolved, notably with the Masterlink integrated sports watch in 2024. The brand has also introduced a range of complications, including tourbillons, chronographs, and jumping hours. Just ahead of Watches and Wonders 2026, the brand unveils what it describes as its most complex timepiece to date, a new interpretation featuring an original and compelling take on one of watchmaking’s most revered complications: the Masterlink Perpetual Calendar.
Perpetual calendars often feel like a cluttered puzzle… By crowding multiple indications into small, uniform sub-dials, these timepieces frequently become difficult to read at a glance. Traditional layouts often adhere to specific visual rules where symmetry and rigorous structure serve as the foundation for their complex display. In this regard, the new Gerald Charles Masterlink Perpetual Calendar is an interesting take on this classic complication; it breaks from convention with an intentional, asymmetrical design that prioritises the user’s daily needs. By featuring an oversized counter for the date – arguably the most vital information for daily wear – the watch acknowledges that you rarely need to check the current month. Meanwhile, the subsidiary indications necessary for setting the calendar are cleverly downsized. Interestingly, this asymmetry doesn’t feel chaotic; it is nicely balanced against the specific geometry of the case (with its signature smile at 6 o’clock), allowing the dial layout to sit with a sense of visual harmony.
As explained by the brand’s designer, Octavio Garcia, “The Masterlink Perpetual Calendar represents the most advanced expression of the Gerald Charles design language to date. It marks a turning point in the Masterlink collection, where form, function, and movement converge into a single architectural system.”
The new ultra-thin perpetual calendar movement, the automatic calibre GCA11000is based on a Vaucher micro-rotor movement, in a shaped version and with a proprietary module. This movement beats at 3Hz and offers 50 hours of power reserve. Visible through the back of the watch, its bridges are shaped and finished to reflect the geography of Geneva. Straight Geneva stripes represent the city’s roads, while curved, undulating stripes echo the surface of Lake Léman. The brand pushed this attention to detail, marking the position of the Gerald Charles atelier on Rue du Mont-Blanc 3 with a black ruby. The gold-plated micro-rotor has a hexagonal honeycomb motif.
This distinctive interpretation of the Masterlink Perpetual Calendar is crafted from Grade 5 titanium, featuring a sophisticated 40mm diameter that strikes a balance between modern presence and wearability. This lightweight construction, based on the time-only Masterlink, which includes a matching integrated titanium bracelet, brings its total weight to just 95g. At 10mm, the watch is slim enough to slip under your cuff, yet its architectural lines ensure it commands attention the moment it is out. The case and bracelet combine polished and matte surfaces with a special sandblasted finish that the brand calls Darkblast, resulting in a soft, velvet-like touch that feels almost like rubber. The watch is also water resistant to 100m despite its shaped design and its 4 correctors.
Two versions of the watch are presented. One with a two-level gradient dial with a vertical cut-out grille construction, finished in ruthenium. More technical, the second one features an open-worked dial with a thin sapphire layer that holds the hour markers in place, allowing a clear view of the calendar mechanism’s intricacies.
The Gerald Charles Masterlink Perpetual Calendar retails for CHF 63,000 for the smoked dial version and CHF 70,000 for the sapphire dial version. For more details, please visit www.geraldcharles.com.
