The Best Watches Introduced by GLASHÜTTE ORIGINAL in 2021
Glashütte Original had some surprising new watches for us last year, and here are the best ones.
Glashütte Original is one of the few German Haute Horlogerie brands with a history dating back to 1845. The Saxon brand mixes proper mechanical watchmaking prowess with interesting designs, colours and textures. There’s something for everyone with collections ranging from very sporty to very retro and highly classical. In what was a challenging year for any brand, Glashütte Original impressed us with several new iterations across its portfolio. Here is what we consider the best ones of the year.
Glashütte Original SeaQ 39.5mm Reed Green
With green being perhaps the most trendy and popular colour of 2021, it all comes down to the tone and texture of the green elements to determine whether it works or not. The Glashütte Original SeaQ 39.5mm Reed Green received quite an appealing matte-green lacquered dial, paired with a green ceramic insert. The dial has a soft, grainy texture with large applied numerals and indices for the hours. It has a domed sapphire crystal, a closed caseback, screw-down crown and 200m water-resistance. It’s driven by the brand’s in-house calibre 39-11, which provides 40 hours of autonomy. You can opt for a stainless steel bracelet with a fine adjustment folding clasp or a green rubber strap, or grey textile strap on a pin buckle or folding clasp.

Glashütte Original Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition 2021
Glashütte Original has made it a habit of presenting limited edition watches, not limited by number but by production period. The Glashütte Original Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition 2021 is only available for a 12-month period and has a unique dial, both in colour and texture. The result is striking, with a luscious green tone that gets darker towards the edge of the dial and a deeply grooved texture. The indices are milled into the dial, exposing the silver base material. The recessed small seconds and 30-minute chronograph counter interfere with the pattern only minimally. The Glashütte Original Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition 2021 uses the in-house made calibre 39-34, which can be seen through the sapphire caseback.

Glashütte Original PanoInverse Limited Edition
One of the most unusual yet captivating watches by Glashütte Original is undoubtedly the PanoInverse. In 2021 the manufacture presented a new platinum edition, limited to 25 pieces only. The “inverted” movement has an anthracite-grainé finishing with a hand-applied guilloché decoration on both sides. The balance wheel is placed on the front side of the movement and has a Duplex swan-neck fine adjustment set-up. The manually wound movement is made in-house and displays the hours, minutes and small seconds on an off-centred dial. A simple power reserve indicator finishes off the display. This most technical and daring iteration of Glashütte Original’s Pano collection is worn on a Louisiana alligator leather strap and priced at EUR 45,000.

Glashütte Original Excellence Perpetual Calendar Salmon
Although most often GO’s Sixties and Seventies collections are the ones associated with bold colours, Glashütte Original launched a surprising version of the more classical Senator Perpetual Calendar. In the collection for more than 22 years now, it was presented as a limited edition of 100 pieces, equipped with a spectacular galvanic rose opaline dial. The deep blue accents provide a strong contrast against the rich salmon-pink tone. Renowned for its legibility, the Excellence Perpetual Calendar’s indications are spread across the dial evenly. Next to the central hours, minutes and seconds, it indicates the date, day of the week, month, leap year and moon phase. Set in a steel case, the calibre 36-12 delivers a healthy 100 hours of running time and is topped with the signature “Double G” rotor, with the G’s now skeletonised.
