French brand Baltic has really been on a roll lately with several standout models, including the best-selling MR micro-rotor series, and the popular Hermétique Tourer field watch just got a fresh dose of summer colours inspired by the 1970s California vibe. While the design and specs haven’t changed, the new dial and strap colours really freshen things up and broaden the appeal of the collection, especially for summer. The brighter colours also contemporize the aesthetic a bit, even as these maintain the vintage-inspired design. A nickname could be the “casual Friday” editions.

The stainless steel case is rather compact at 37mm in diameter and 10.8mm in height (lug-to-lug 46mm) and is mostly brushed with a polished bezel and crown. That crown is also uniquely recessed into the case for a clean and integrated look. A double-domed sapphire crystal with an internal anti-reflective coating protects the dial, while the screw-on case back is solid. Water resistance is rated at 150 metres. Like previous models, the FKM rubber straps match the dial colours and feature quick release levers, and there’s two bracelet options as well – beads of rice or flat link.

The new Baltic Hermétique Summer Collection is all about the new glossy colours, including pink, orange, yellow and turquoise, which certainly brighten the wrist along with the complementing rubber straps. Existing colours in the collection, matte beige, green, blue and brown, have a darker and more serious tone, although there’s a bronze case option that adds some warmth. A brushed black railroad track spans the perimeter, but the main glossy centre is where the new colours shine. The applied indices and Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock are made from Super-LumiNova BGW9, while the syringe hour and minute hands have matching lume inserts. The lollipop seconds hand also has a lume aperture. Legibility is excellent on all colourways, day or night.

Powering the Hermétique Summer Collection is the Miyota 9039 automatic with 24 jewels, a beat rate of 28,800vph (4Hz) and a 42-hour power reserve. Functions include central hours, minutes and hacking seconds (true no-date movement). Introduced in 2018, accuracy is rated at -10/+30 seconds per day, but it’s generally well within those parameters in practice.

Baltic watches are true value propositions, and these are no exception with the models on rubber straps retailing for EUR 550 and those on a bracelet (either style) retailing for EUR 615, excluding taxes. Not bad for stylish, well-made field watches that are ready for summer adventures.

  1. I cannot believe more people do not make tropic straps properly. The on wrist shots always show the flat non textured part of the rubber mold at the spring bar. This is VERY unattractive. Only two vendors make tropics with proper detailing around the spring bar. Baltic should have use done. As the author / owner of Strapsense, I have reviewed them ALL.

  2. In six months the strap will be collection of arm cheese so does it matter?

  3. Completely agree with you Strapsense! Seeing that flat part of the strap right at the case completely ruins the look and vibe. Just kills it! I never understood that about tropic straps! I would immediately rip that thing off and put on a proper rubber strap. They should have done just a basic plain curved fkm rubber strap. That would have been nice!
