Audemars Piguet Unveils an Innovative Setting Device for its RO Perpetual
A robotised watch box developed with the Dubai Future Foundation, automatically adjusts your ROQP.
Perpetual calendars are one of the most fascinating and elegant complications. Their sophisticated mechanism automatically adjusts the date throughout the year, accounting for the varying lengths of months and the leap year cycle, eliminating the need for manual correction. Yet one challenge is that if your watch stops, resetting it can be complicated, often requiring specialised correction tools and a precise sequence of adjustments… If adjusting your calendar watch feels like a hassle, Audemars Piguet might have the perfect solution for you.
On the occasion of Dubai Watch Week 2025, Audemars Piguet and the Dubai Future Foundation present an innovative setting device that automatically adjusts and winds your 41mm Audemars Piguet perpetual calendar – if it is equipped with the new calibre 7138. The project started two years ago; during the previous edition of the Dubai Watch Week, we were discreetly invited to visit the DFF’s impressive robotics lab, where we learned about the project’s launch.
Introduced in 2025, the calibres 7136 and 7138 are automatic perpetual calendars indicating the hours, minutes, day, date, month, leap year and moon phase. A 24-hour indicator is incorporated into the day subdial at 9 o’clock, and the calibre 7138 also integrates a week indicator. Importantly, these were designed with user-friendliness in mind. With their smart correction mechanism, all adjustments can be performed via the all-in-one crown, without the need for correctors integrated into the case band.
While winding boxes are often used for perpetual calendars, Audemars Piguet now goes one step further with an automated solution combining mechanical engineering with robotics, computing, and AI, developed with the Dubai Future Foundation. Placing your AP perpetual calendar inside the box with the lid closed, a camera identifies which indications need to be adjusted, and the system performs all corrections within 5 minutes, replicating the action of a human hand on the crown.
The winding and setting box, which will be available in 2026, was developed to put the user at the heart of the experience. As mentioned by Lucas Raggi, Chief Industrial Officer at Audemars Piguet: “The idea of creating a setting mechanism for the Perpetual Calendar has been a part of Audemars Piguet’s vision for years. The innovative ‘all-in-one’ crown of calibre 7138 has made that dream possible, thanks to a cross-disciplinary collaboration with the Dubai Future Foundation.”
