While A. Lange & Söhne tends to be quite conservative in its design, it can sometimes get a little bit more creative when it comes to limited editions or boutique exclusive watches – think, for instance, about the 1815 Chrono Boutique Edition or the Terra-Brown Saxonia. Today, the brand is unveiling a new version of the Saxonia Annual Calendar, which for the occasion has been spruced up with a new dial and a surprising strap. Meet the new A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Annual Calendar U.S. Boutique Edition.

Already available in three different versions – white gold, pink gold and platinum – the Saxonia Annual Calendar collection receives a fourth member, which differs from its siblings by its dial, its strap and a new treatment on the rotor. Mechanically speaking, the new Saxonia Annual Calendar U.S. Boutique Edition is identical to its siblings and shares most of its specifications with the other three versions.

Thus, we have a reasonably sized watch, with a slim profile and an elegant shape – which could easily fit in the “dress watch” category. At 38.5mm in diameter and less than 10mm in height, it is still a slender timepiece given its complexity. As an annual calendar, it features multiple indications on its dial: day of the week, the signature ALS large date with two digits, the month and a combination of a small seconds counter and a moon phase at 6 o’clock – the moon phase indicator is very precise and only needs to be corrected by one day every 122.6 years.

As for the annual calendar complication, it sits right between the standard complete calendar and the complex, more expensive perpetual calendar. As we always tend to say, here at MONOCHROME, the annual calendar is certainly the best compromise. The date only needs to be advanced once a year when February transitions into March. The rest of the year, it will take into account months with 30 or 31 days and will adjust automatically to the right date.

For this Saxonia Annual Calendar U.S. Boutique Edition, which is limited to 25 pieces, A. Lange & Söhne chose to add a new dial, presented here in galvanised grey and combined with a white gold case – a classic combination at ALS, found for instance on the Triple Split or the Datograph Perpetual. White gold hands and indices complete this stylish dial and the shiny blue strap echoes the blue disc of the moon phase.

On the back, we find the same movement – calibre L085.1 – with self-winding capacity via an off-centred micro-rotor, thus respecting the classical 3/4 architecture of the German School of Watchmaking. The movement is finished in the typical ALS way, with untreated German silver plates and bridges, hand-decorated parts, blued screws and an engraved cock. New to this model is the treatment applied to the rotor. For the first time, the parts of the rotor around the embossed A. Lange & Söhne logo are plated in black rhodium, while they are usually entirely gold-plated.
