To celebrate the upcoming Chinese Year of the Horse, which kicks off on 17 February 2026, Arnold & Son presents a limited edition of eight Perpetual Moon timepieces. Marking its sixth consecutive year of editions dedicated to the Chinese New Year, Arnold & Son turns to its fascinating Perpetual Moon reference, presented in a 41.5mm red gold case with a lively dial executed with a range of artisanal techniques.

The Chinese New Year is determined by the traditional lunisolar calendar, and each lunar year is represented by one of 12 animals matched with one of the 10 heavenly stems (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). This year welcomes the Year of the Fire Horse, whose personality has been artistically captured on the dial of the Perpetual Moon, a fitting choice for an occasion so intertwined with the cycles of the Moon.

Introduced in 2013, the Perpetual Moon moves the traditional moon phase aperture from 6 o’clock and stages the moon in all its glory in a large 29mm window spanning the dial from 10 to 2 o’clock. Not only is the aperture large, but the realistic 11.2mm hand-engraved moon exerts its gravitational pull to great effect.

The Year of the Horse comes in a luxurious 41.5mm polished red gold case and captures the fiery personality of the horse with incredible realism on the dial. Engraved by hand in red gold and applied to the dial, the horse’s muscular three-dimensional anatomy ripples with energy and incredible detail. Set against a sparkling black aventurine night sky, the dial’s scenery suggests volcanic terrain, with dark basalt rocks engraved and painted by hand and gold powder to create the trail of fiery red sparks left in the wake of the rearing horse. For extra dramatic effect, the embers are treated with red and yellow Super-LumiNova and glow in the dark.

The radiant mother-of-pearl moon, with its realistic hand-painted shadows, waxes and wanes in a star-studded black aventurine glass sky, with the constellations of Cassiopeia and Ursa Major depicted with larger stars. The hand-painted constellations allude to John Arnold’s historical marine chronometers, precision timekeepers used on board to calculate a ship’s longitude by observing celestial bodies. Like the fiery embers, the moon and constellations are highlighted with Super-LumiNova. The hours and minutes are indicated by faceted hands and hour markers.

With a deviation of only one day every 122 years, the precision astronomical moon phase display has an adjustment system on the movement side. Traditional moon phases are usually adjusted by the crown, and it’s tricky to get the position of the moon just right. To counter this common problem, A&S has placed a second moon phase indicator with a precise scale and representations of the cycles on the caseback to adjust the phases with extra precision. Equipped with the manual-winding A&S1512 calibre, the double barrels provide a hearty 90-hour power reserve, and the movement and its top-notch finishings are revealed through the sapphire caseback.

Considered the luckiest number in Chinese traditions, the Year of the Horse is a limited edition of eight pieces. It is paired with a black alligator leather strap with a red lining and an 18k red gold pin buckle. The Perpetual Moon 41.5 Red Gold Year of the Horse retails for CHF 62,600 (incl. tax).
