The New, Accessible Yema Superman Swiss Edition Signals the Return to Sellita Movements

In a transparent strategic move, the French brand moves back to Swiss Sellita movements for its entry-level models.

Watch brands rarely take the time to explain their strategic shifts to the public, making Yema‘s transparency all the more commendable. In unveiling its new 2025 references, the French watchmaker provided insight into a significant transition: introducing the Superman Swiss Editions. These timepieces, which represent the brand’s entry to the Superman collection, are now powered by Swiss-made Sellita movements, marking the end of Yema’s use of its proprietary Yema2000 and Yema3000 calibres, which were… nuanced.

This shift allows Yema to keep its range accessible and lets the brand’s watchmakers focus on producing its French manufacture calibres – CMM.10, CMM.20 Micro-Rotor, and CMM.30 Tourbillon – which will be used in more high-end watches. While it may seem subtle, it’s meaningful. Fans of Yema’s signature designs can continue to enjoy them at familiar price points. At the same time, those seeking an upgrade can explore the Manufacture collection, which will introduce new complications and technical advancements. Below, the CMM.20 micro-rotor and the CMM.10 automatic.

In addition to this move back to Swiss Sellita movements, Yema indicates that while it ends the production of the Yema2000 and Yema3000 calibres, warranty, maintenance, and repairs on these movements will be maintained. Finally, Yema also said that it won’t rely on crowdfunding campaigns anymore. With its return to Sellita movements, Yema will maintain a portion of its catalogue in the accessible price range. And now, let’s look at the new Yema Superman Swiss Edition, powered by the Sellita SW200-1 calibre.

The Superman Swiss Edition stays true to its 1970s predecessor, much like the 2018 Superman Heritage, and many other models in between, while incorporating modern refinements. As expected, Yema has introduced subtle updates and variations, but the essence of the vintage Superman Ref. 53.00.16 remains intact.

The new series retains signature design elements in 39mm (47mm L2L) and 41mm (49mm L2L) polished stainless steel cases, including the 120-click unidirectional bezel with an aluminium insert featuring a 60-minute diving scale and Yema’s patented bezel-lock mechanism. Both case sizes measure 13.9mm thick, and thanks to a double-domed sapphire crystal, a screwed crown and caseback, offer an comfortable 990 feet (300m) water-resistance.

Finishing details include a crown embossed with the Yema logo and a caseback featuring the brand’s historical coat of arms, which is embossed and micro-blasted for a refined look.

The Superman Swiss Edition offers a choice of vintage-inspired dials in black, white, beige, and blue. The bezel matches the dial colour for the blue variant, while the others feature a classic black bezel. The dials maintain Yema’s signature aesthetic with printed luminous markers – a combination of dots and stick indices, topped with a triangle at 12 o’clock. A date window sits at 3 o’clock with a white background across all variants, and time is displayed using the signature Superman hands: a sword-style for the hour, an arrow-tipped minute hand, and a shovel-shaped running seconds hand.

The watch’s power source is the Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1, widely regarded as a direct replacement for ETA’s 2824-2. It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a 38-hour power reserve. If it is not considered a fine watchmaking engine, it is a tried-and-tested movement known for its reliability, its very decent precision and its ability to be serviced by most capable watchmakers. In short, it will do the job of powering the watch for many years.

The Superman Heritage steel bracelet, a five-link design with a brushed and polished finish, a diver’s extension, and a double-safety folding clasp complete the look.

All Yema Superman Swiss Edition references are fairly priced at EUR 1,190 (600 euros less than a more refined Superman with manufacture calibre CMM.10). It will be available for immediate delivery starting February 21, 2025 – reflecting Yema’s commitment to improved availability in the new year. For more details, visit yema.com.
